Joseph Pearson

1776 - 1840

Joseph Pearson:- was baptised on 24th. July 1776 at St. Michael's, Brierley Hill. The son of Joseph and Elizabeth (nee Batham). He married Phebe Parrish at the Parish Church, Halesowen on 25th. December 1796.

They had twelve children:- Thomas, bapt. 09/07/1797 Elizabeth, bapt. 18/08/1799 Joanna, bapt. 15/03/1801 Joseph, bap.31/07/1803 Phoebe, bapt. 15/09/1805 John, bapt. 27/03/1808 Sarah bn 1810 d:20/05/1814 William, bapt. 17/02/1812 Sarah, bn. 26/08/1814 James, bapt. 26/11/1816 David, bapt. 14/03/1819 George, bapt. 08/02/1822

Their residence is given as Brockmoor, detailed in other records as 'Orchard House' and Joseph's occupation as Collier. This is in the old context, meaning a dealer in coal, not a miner. Later, Joseph was a Coal Master, being the owner of mines and employing miners.

'Orchard House' was situated in a site just off what is now Wallows Road - one of the present day streets being Orchard Street. The exact site can be seen on Fowlers Maps of Kingswinford 1824 and 1840.

Joseph was in business with his wife's brother, John Parrish and his son Richard Parrish, the firm being known as 'Parrish & Pearson', or at one point 'Parrish, Pearson & Parrish' -  as shown in the Parish Register records of the baptisms of the children of William Pearson (born 1812 - Joseph's son), where William is obviously working for his father and his occupation is given as 'Clerk to Messrs. Parrish, Pearson & Parrish'. As can be seen from Fowlers 1824 map they were operating a Colliery near to the Canal just off what is now the Brierley Hill Road in Brockmoor - on the far side of the canal almost opposite the junction with Moor Lane. 'Parrish & Pearson' continued in business long after Josephs death, as can be seen from a Survey of Working Mines dated 1869.

Joseph was deeply involved with the formation of the early Methodist church in the area. He was a Trustee and assisted in the purchase of the land in Bank Street for the church and cemetery. He was a lay preacher and Superintendent of the Sunday School. See the booklet 'Truly Together' by Peter Bloore.

Joseph died at his residence (Orchard House) - his death certificate says  Round Oak - on 16th. September 1840, aged 64, from 'mortification of the left foot.' He left an extensive  will, detailing the extent of his business and property dealings. His son Joseph is not mentioned in the will. Joseph was interred in a vault at Bank Street Methodist Church. This area has since been covered and is now the car park, but within the Church's accounts records is on entry 5th Feb. 1847 to John Pearson for ground for the erection of the late Joseph Pearson's vault, £5.00.00.
