Friday 8:00pm Unlike last season, where there was one break out show in the hour ("Joan Of Arcadia"), there was none of that this season as the networks saw their audiences shrink under less than harsh competition. NBC's "Dateline" (58th in viewers, 96th in adults) came out on top, while the big story was in CBS's "Joan" (74, 120), which saw its audience shrink by more than 20%, leading to a surprize cancellation Over on ABC, "8 Simple Rules" (96, 110) took a big dive from its Tuesday numbers, down 30%, while "Complete Savages" (107, 110) at 8:30pm got, well, savaged. It was replaced later in the season by repeats of "8 Simple Rules" (103, 120) which performed only marginally better. Over on Fox, the hour was a complete mess, as usual, with various series such as "Next Great Champ" (130, 94), "The Bernie Mack Show" (132, 105) a movie (127, 137), "Totally Outrageous Behavior" (149, 142) and "World's Craziest Videos" (145, 142) all flunked out by epic propostions, but the best was saved for first, where "The Complex: Malibu" (171, 161) was one of Fox's worst rated series ever. Over on the UPN, "Enterprise" (165, 165) ended its run with its most pathetic numbers yet, while the WB found itself in last place with "What I Like About You" (171, 165) and "Grounded For Life" (162, 165). Next season, the only shows to find themselves in this same timeslots will be "Bernie Mack" and "What I Like About You." Who did what to whom for those two to get renewed? 9:00pm An hour later, things weren't much better on the big four. CBS won overall with "JAG" (49, 120), which, despite huge early season losses, managed to curb them somewhat, while "Third Watch" (53, 73) on NBC, also ended its run basically flat from last season. ABC was third with the loser combo of "Hope & Faith" (94, 88) and "Less Than Perfect" (105, 98), both down by solid proportions from last season, while Fox was a complete mess once again, airing many of the same series it aired at 8pm, plus the huge dud "Johnny Zero" (148, 142). The WB actually beat it many weeks as "Reba" (136, 142) showed solid growth from last season, and "Living With Fran" (151, 152) stepped in later in the season to solid numbers. "Blue Collar TV" also aired behind it for many weeks. Over on the UPN, there was no trying whatsoever with repeats of "Top Model 3" (176, 177) and "4" (180, 170), which is obviously not a winning long term strategy for the network. Next season, the only shows to find themselves in this same timeslots will be "Reba," "Living With Fran" and "Hope & Faith." What did Kelley Ripa have to do to get that renewed? 10:00pm An hour later, things were actually quite a bit better for the networks. At the front end of the season, "Medical Investigation" (61, 70) got off to a strong start, eclipsing both ABC's venerable "20/20" and CBS's dud "dr. vegas" (72, 110). Mid season, CBS switched it up with "Num3ers" (35, 59) and found a winner, while NBC was just behind it with "Law & Order: TBJ" (37, 63), although it beat "Num3ers" on many occasions. Despite that, TBJ got cancelled. Huh? |
