Despite
a slow start for the broadcast nets, they picked up steam in February
and built momentum throughout the spring season. This year, the sweeps
months averaged 51.7 million viewers, while the non-sweeps months
averaged 48.0 million- 7% less. Last season, that difference was just
3.6%, which is probably explained by big event TV like "Lost" and
"Housewives" which went blank for many of the non-sweeps weeks.

Were
18-49ers particularly impressed by this season's crop of hot series?
Not particularly- ratings were basically flat over last season with a
few months showing worrying losses. The sweeps months averaged a 19.1
rating, compared to a 17.7 for the non sweeps months.

In
case you
don't remember, this measure takes the difference between the first and
fourth rated networks and adds it to the difference between the UPN and
the WB. A lower number means that the competition was much tighter
during that particular month. This season, the competition index
averaged a 4.89, compared to a 5.0 last season, which means that this
season was slightly more competitive than last season.

CBS
won the season, but did it win every month? No- thanks to the
Superbowl, Fox took February. Despite the fact that ABC was second on
the season, it averaged less than a third place ranking, while the UPN,
for the first time in years, ranked higher, on average, than the WB.

This one takes
the difference between a networks highest and lowest rated months, then
divides it by the overall season average. A lower number means that
ratings
were pretty stable, the higher the more peak and valley-ish. Just
like every season, Fox knew both feast and famine this season, while
the UPN was the most stable overall.
