Luke put the gun to his heart and pulled the trigger.
Sonny was talking to Mike at the bar when they heard the gunshot. They both ran to Luke's office and stopped as if hit by a brick wall as they saw the sight before them. Luke was in his chair, blood all over him. Sonny thought he was dead, but went over to him anyway. He checked his pulse to find that he was still alive, but it was weak. "Call 911 now," Sonny screamed back at Mike.
Mike ran to the phone and immediately called 911. He got on the phone and told them that there was a man who has been shot and was in need of an ambulance immediately. When he hung up the phone, he walked over and stood behind Sonny, placing a hand on his shoulder, as Sonny tried to stop the bleeding.
Mike: Do you think the ambulance will get here in time?
Sonny: I don't know. I'm surprised he's even alive right now.
Mike: He's a strong man. He'll pull through it.
Sonny: He's not strong at the moment. He wasn't strong when I left the office. Dammit, why didn't I take the gun with me?
Mike: How would you have known he would do something like this?
Sonny: Because he handed me the gun and told me to kill him. He wanted to die because he thought that was the only way to make peace with himself and his family.
Mike: Why?
Sonny: I can't get into it, but it was bad enough that I should have never left him by himself. If he dies....
Mike: He won't die.
Sonny: How can you be so sure?
Mike: Because he has too much to live for.
The ambulance came by about 5 minutes later. Mac was following them.
Mac: What happened here?
Sonny: What does it look like? The man's been shot.
Mac: By who?
Sonny: Himself.
Mac: What?! Why?
Sonny: There's no need for an investigation, Mac. You can stop asking questions because I won't answer them. All you need to know is that there is no one to arrest out there.
Paramedic: We've got to bring this guy to GH right away.
Sonny: I'm going with you in the ambulance.
Paramedic: We can't allow that. Only family is allowed to accompany in the ambulance.
Sonny: Do you see any family here? I'm the closest thing he's got to a family who's here, so I'm going. You can't stop me.
Mac: Let him go. Luke's going to need someone with him if he's going to make it this through alive.
Paramedic: Okay. I don't have time to argue with you anyway. Let's go.
Luke is carried into the ambulance and Sonny follows him in. The whole ride to GH, Sonny holds Luke's hand while the paramedics try to slow down the bleeding. As Sonny watches, he can't believe how much blood there was. He didn't think Luke would make it through the night.
Luke is rushed into an operating room. Bobbie sees her brother there and notices Sonny is about to follow.
Bobbie: What happened?
Sonny: Luke shot himself.
Bobbie: Why?
Sonny: He didn't want to live anymore.
Bobbie: What do you mean he didn't want to live?! Sonny what's going on?
Sonny: Bobbie, I don't want to get into this right now. Can you just check to see if he's going to make it?
Bobbie nodded her head and headed for OR. Once inside, she walked over to Monica who was about to perform the surgery.
Monica: You shouldn't be in here, Bobbie.
Bobbie: I have to be, Monica. I'm the best nurse GH has got and my brother needs the best right now. I won't lose him.
Monica: Alright. Hand me a scalpel.
Mac is in the waiting room with Sonny. "I need a statement, Sonny."
Sonny: Would be possible if we just drop this for right now? My best friend is dying, Scorpio.
Mac: Just answer one question. Why did Luke want to kill himself?
Sonny: He thought everyone he loved would be better off without him. Is that good enough for you now?
Mac: One more question.
Sonny: What?
Mac: Does Laura know?
Sonny: Oh, God. I didn't even call her yet. I'll call her now.
Sonny pulls out his cell phone and Laura's number. He takes a deep breath before dialing the number, having no clue how he was going to break the news to her. She answered the phone on the second ring.
Sonny: Laura? It's Sonny.
Laura: Hi Sonny. Is anything wrong?
Sonny: Well, actually...
Laura: (panic and worry in her voice) What happened?
Sonny: Luke's in the hospital with a bullet wound.
Before Sonny could explain any more, Laura had already hung up the phone and started packing to return back to Port Charles.
