After surgery, Luke is brought into ICU. He is hooked to almost
every machine possible, but he is still alive, barely. Sonny walks
in and takes a seat by Luke.
"What is this about? The rape happened years ago according to you, so why try to kill yourself now? Laura's forgiven you, and she's the only one who matters when it comes to this. She's the only one who has the right to judge you. No one else was there, and if she felt you deserved forgiveness, then don't doubt her judgement. Come on, Luke. You can't die. I don't care what you think about yourself; don't you know what you're doing now is worse than the rape? Don't you realize leaving your wife a widow and your children fatherless is going to be worse? How do you think Laura is going to be able to deal with that? When she looks into her kids' faces, she will be reminded of the fact that her power to forgive you, led to them losing their father. She's going to be overcome with guilt. And what about your son? Did you forget about him too? He's going to feel just as guilty for walking out on you. Not to mention how guilty I would feel for not taking the gun with me. You have to make it, Luke. You have too many people riding on this one, and this is one bet I don't want to lose."
Sonny just sat there when Bobbie walked in.
Bobbie: Hi. You do know that only family members are allowed.
Sonny: I know, but I had to see him. How is he?
Bobbie: (flipping through the charts) Well, according to the records, the surgery went off as well as they hoped for, but that's not saying much. They don't expect him to make it through tomorrow.
Sonny: That bad, huh?
Bobbie: He barely missed his heart. But the blood did get trapped in the heart for a while and actually caused his heart to stop during surgery. He did a lot of damage to himself. Sonny, I need to know why my brother did this.
Sonny: He thought he deserved to die. It really was as simple as that.
Bobbie: But what caused it?
Sonny: I'd really like to tell you the whole story, but it isn't my story to tell.
Bobbie: Dammit, Sonny! Luke may not be alive long enough to tell me and I think I have a right to know!
Sonny: I have a compromise. When Laura gets here, let me tell
her. If she feels you have a right to know, then she can tell you.
Bobbie: Like she would tell me, especially if it was her fault.
Sonny: That will have to be up to her. But I can tell you that none of this is her fault.
Sonny walks out of the room and Bobbie goes to her brother.
Bobbie: Why, Luke? Why do this to yourself? What caused this?
She starts to cry and leaves the room
Laura got off the airplane with Lulu and Lesley and they were headed for General Hospital. On her way there, she sees Lucky walking down the street.
Laura: Lucky! Lucky, how's your father?
Lucky: You'd have to ask him that question.
Laura: So the bullet wound wasn't as bad as Sonny said?
Lucky: What are you talking about?
Laura: Sonny called me in North Carolina and told me Luke was shot and was in surgery. You didn't know?
Lucky: I had no idea.
Laura: Come on and get in. We have to hurry.
Lucky gets into the car and joins Lulu in the back seat.
Laura: What's going on that you hadn't known that your father was shot? Why didn't Sonny tell you immediately?
Lucky just sat there, quietly. How was he going to let her know that he knows about the rape and the sight of his father had disgusted him. Actually, the sight of Laura bothered him too as he couldn't see how she could forgive him.
Laura: I want an answer, Lucky! What's going on?
Lucky: Dad and I got into a fight and I walked out. I hadn't seen him since.
The Spencers pull into GH and immediately run inside. There, Laura runs into Sonny.
Laura: Where is he?
Sonny: He's in ICU. The surgery is over, but his chances of making it are slim.
Laura runs off to Luke's room. Lesley, Lulu, and Lucky wait outside looking through the window so that they can give Laura a chance to be alone with him.
When she walks inside, she pulls up a chair next to his bed and touches his face lightly. "Luke, it's me. I'm here. You have to pull through, Luke. You have to make it. I can't live my life without you in it. Please, whatever strength you still have left in you, use it to help pull through this. I promise you that I will never leave again. Just be sure you don't leave me and our family."
Laura places her head on his chest and lays there fall a long time, listening to his heartbeat. She never realized until this moment how his heartbeat was so comforting, especially at a time like this. She starts to cry and cries herself to sleep.
