Chapter Six

Laura still had her head on Luke's chest when Bobbie walked in.

Bobbie: I didn't even know you were here.

Laura: I just came straight to his room.  How is he, Bobbie?

Bobbie: He's still not good.  There should have been some improvement by now, even just a little, but there's no change.

Laura: How did this happen?

Bobbie: Sonny won't give me the details, but all I know is that he shot himself.

Laura: What?  You can't be serious.  Luke would never try to kill himself.

Bobbie: I'm just telling you what I know.  Sonny was with him and he's the only one who knows the whole story.

Laura: He wouldn't tell you why?

Bobbie: He said he wanted to tell you first.

Laura: Thanks, Bobbie.  I think it's about time I got some answers.

Laura walks out and heads straight for Sonny in the waiting room.

Laura: I want answers, Sonny.  Why did Luke do this to himself?

Sonny: I'll give you anything I know.  Can we go somewhere in private, though?

Laura: Sure.  Let's go in here.  No one's ever in here.  (They head to the empty room) So, what's going on?  My husband tries to shoot himself and my son had no idea that any of this happened.  I want answers now, Sonny.

Sonny: Well, maybe you should sit down.  It's not a pretty picture. (Laura takes a seat and Sonny sits across from her) Lucky found out about the rape.

Laura: What rape?

Sonny: Where Luke... a long time ago...

Laura: No.  How did he...

Sonny: From what I understand, Lucky confronted Luke, and Luke couldn't deny it.

Laura: So that's why Lucky said there was a fight between them.  Why wasn't I called right away?  Why did Luke turn to you and not me?

Sonny: He was trying to find a way to tell you.  That's why he headed to the club.  I was there and he told me some of the story.  No details, just told me how he had raped you and you saw past that enough to forgive him.

Laura: It wasn't a simple black and white picture.  Luke knows that.  He knew I was in love with him at the time, but I was married.  And I knew he was too drunk to even think straight.  I knew that wasn't Luke that night, but another man.  And yes, I did forgive him.  Why is this all coming out now?

Sonny: Lucky's friend, Liz, got raped.  Lucky has been living through it through her.  He's been really great with her, but he is furious at what that man took from her.  Now he sees the same thing being done to you when Luke raped you.

Laura: But it's not the same.  I wasn't beaten or anything like that.  I was taken against my will.  I won't deny it was rape, but Luke was there to help me through it.  He was the only one for me at that time.  Everyone else told me to forget about it, but Luke helped me through it.  That's how I was able to forgive him.  He shouldn't be compared to Liz's rapist.  He could never do anything like that now.

Sonny: I think your son is the one you need to try to convince here.  I have no right to judge you or Luke in this matter, since I wasn't there.  All I have seen is two people who love each other more than anything, and that is the only thing I have to judge you by.

Laura: You still haven't told me why he felt he had to kill himself.

Sonny: (taking the letter out of his pocket) I think you should read this.

Laura: What is this?

Sonny: Luke's suicide note to you.  A goodbye letter.

Laura: But he's not going to die.  I don't need to read this because he won't leave me like this.  He promised to stay with me forever.

Sonny: If you want the answers you're looking for, then you should read it.  I'll give you some time alone.

Sonny leaves and Laura fingers the letter.  She opens up and reads it.

Dear Laura,

As I look back at my life, I see that the best thing that ever happened to me was you.  I wish you could say the same, but I know you can't.  I tried to make up for one mistake that I made all those years ago with you, but as I see my son's reactions to it, I realize that there is no redemption.  Men like me do not deserve the things that you have given me.  We don't deserve loving wives, or children, or any sort of happiness.  We only deserve one thing, and as my final gift to you, I am finally going to put your rapist in the place he belonged all those years ago.

I will always love you, Angel, and I want you to accept my wishes to find another man to love and to be loved by.  I want you to have the kind of life you have always deserved.  I'm sorry for everything.

Love always,

Luke

Laura closes the letter and starts to cry.  "What I don't deserve, Luke Spencer, is to have you leave me like this."
