Chapter Seventeen

Lucky still was sitting against Luke's door when Bobbie walked by.

Bobbie: Lucky?  What are you doing here so late?  Is your mother around?

Lucky: No.  It's just me.  I came to see my Dad.

Bobbie: I know that you already know that visiting hours have been long over.

Lucky: I know, but there were a few things I had to say to him that couldn't wait.

Bobbie: Do you want to sit down?

Lucky: I think I should really go now.  Mom is probably worrying her head off about me.

Laura: Well, I guess I don't have to anymore since I found you.

Laura walked over to Bobbie and Lucky and gave Lucky a hug.

Laura: Don't go running off like that again.  I had no idea where you went.

Lucky: I'm sorry, but I just really needed to say something to Dad.

Laura: Did he listen?

Lucky: I guess.  I don't know.  It was like he was trying to get me to say that I hate his guts or something.

Laura: Maybe I should go talk to him again.  Bobbie, is it okay if I go in?  I know that visiting hours are over, but I really need to speak to him.

Bobbie: Go ahead.  I'll wait out here in case anyone comes by.

Laura walked into Luke's room.  Luke was staring at the ceiling, not paying attention to whoever came in.  He figured it was a nurse or doctor this late at night, and he wasn't in the mood for anyone.  Laura noticed that Luke was off in his own world again.  She stared at him, thinking she was watching a total stranger who just looked like her husband.  This wasn't like him at all... to retreat like this.  He was a fighter, not a quitter, but anyone who saw him now would think the contrary.  Laura took a few steps before speaking.

Laura: So, you don't even notice when someone comes into your room anymore.

Luke: Sorry.  I was just thinking.  I didn't know it was you who came in.  Thought it was another doctor making sure whoever's heart I got in me was still ticking.

Laura: What did Lucky say to you when he was in here earlier?

Luke: Oh, straight to the point about this visit, heh?  No, how are you feeling or anything like that?

Laura: Just answer the question.

Luke: He came in here to give me a lecture in how I'm ruining our family.  That about sums it up.

Laura: Why?

Luke: Well, it seems he overheard you and Lesley talking earlier about how you can't fight for this marriage yourself and stuff like that.  He got the impression that I didn't want to be a part of this family anymore, or at least I was trying to make you not want me.

Laura: He's always been observant.  We can't fault him there.

Luke: So you think so too?  You think I don't love you anymore?

Laura: See?  You don't listen.  And you seem to want to pick a fight with anyone who wants to talk to you lately.  What I said is that I couldn't fight for our marriage all by myself.  You had to fight for it too.  And it's obvious that you're not.  You're not trying to get any better while you're here and you're pushing everyone away.  Sooner or later, Luke, we won't come back.

Luke: If you don't want to be here with me, then there's the door.  Feel free to close it on your way out.

Laura: No.  I'm not going to have you push me away that easily.  Listen to me, Luke Spencer, because this is the last time I'm going to say it.  Lucky finding out about that night was something we couldn't predict.  It's going to take time, but we'll all get past it and pull through to the other side.  You and me, this shouldn't be an issue between us.  We already got past it almost 20 years ago.  I don't see why you feel it should become an issue again.  We have 2 children, a house, a dog, my mother, and us to live through, and the rape doesn't belong in that picture.

Luke: Laura, it's not that simple.

Laura: It is.  If you want what we had and are still capable of having because we do love each other, then you will just get better soon and come home for good without putting your life at risk anymore.  If you don't, then there is nothing more that I can say.  Tell me what it's going to be.

Luke: I love you, Laura, but I don't know if we can get back all of that.  I want to.  I want to more than you even realize, but it's not that simple.  My son is out there hating my guts because of one thing he found out about me.  If he found out anything more, he would try to kill me himself.  And what happens if Lulu finds out about this when she gets older?  I don't know if I can live through this kind of pain again, Laura.

Laura: Isn't our marriage worth the pain right now because you will heal.  And isn't it worth the risk of pain later on?

Luke: It's worth anything.

Laura: Then why don't you live by your words, Luke?  When you come home, start acting like my husband again.  The man that I have loved for so long and will always love.

Luke: What about Lucky?

Laura: Well, we'll handle that when we have to.  Right now, I want you to concentrate on getting better.  You know, Lucky wants you better also, otherwise he wouldn't have made the trip all the way here.

Luke: He just wanted...

Laura: Shh.  He just wanted to see you.  He loves you and that's why he is in pain right now.  It will end, Luke.  Do you trust me?

Luke: With my life.

Laura: Then trust what I say.  It will end and we will overcome this, together.

Luke: I love you, Angel.

Laura: I love you too.
