May 1984: Beth & Lujack surprise Tony & Annabelle

As a wedding present to Tony & Annabelle, Beth & Lujack painted the living room of their new cottage and decorated it for their wedding night.  They snuck out of the reception early, and arrived with a box full of candles and flowers--and Tony's mattress from the boarding house, which Lujack dropped on the floor and plopped down on to test it out.

"You know, it's pretty bare in here, Beth said as she began to place candles around th emattress. "I wish we'd have brought something else."

"What do you need for a honeymoon, besides a bed?"

"Romantic atmosphere."

"Hey," Lujack said as he fixed the broken mantle piece.  "They'll make their own romantic atmosphere."

"Well, the candles will help at least."

"Candles are corny, honey."

"Lujack, you're beyond hope."

Lujack turned back to see her setting everything up and was struck by the romantic scene.  [Fade out]

[Fade in] Lujack is now sitting on the floor watching as Beth finishes lighting the candles surrounding the mattress, now all made and ready for the newlyweds.

"Hey, what are you doing?"

"What does it look like I'm doing?"

"I thought this was supposed to be for a honeymoon, not a funeral," he teased.

"You really don't understand romance, do you?"

Lujack gets defensive.  "Are you kidding me?  I happen to be one of the most romantic guys in Springfield."

Beth laughs.

"You said so yourself!"

"When?"

"That day we went swimming at Laurel Falls."

"No, no," she counters.  "I said you were cute and sexy--not romantic."

"Same thing."

"Uh-uh."  She begins to spread flowers petals over and around the mattress.

"Okay," Lujack says feeling challenged.  "You want romance?  You got romance."  He walks up behind her and pulls her into a dramatic, but brief kiss.  "How was that?"

"On a scale from one to ten?"

"Yeah."

"About a two."

"Oh, man, what are you saying?"

"Coming on strong isn't romantic Lujack.  Romance is tenderness.  It's caring for someone else."

"Okay kids, welcome to Sunday School."

Beth smiles.  "A kiss on the cheek can be romantic."

"Oh brother, man..."

"I'll show you," she says as she lightly touches his face with her hand.  She looks deeply into his eyes for a moment and then caresses his cheek with a soft kiss.  "So?"

Lujack can't contain his smile.  "Yeah, well, maybe if we do it again." He leans in for another kiss and Beth responds equally.

They're interrupted by the arrival of the newlyweds.  Tony demands to know what's going on, oblivious to the decorations surrounding them.  Annabelle notices them immediately.

Tony & Annabelle thank them for all their work.  Beth & Lujack offer to smuggle in their meals so that they can spend their honeymoon at their new home.

They feign innocence when Tony recognizes his mattress from the boarding house.  Annabelle quickly gets her hubby's mind off of that, which is Beth & Lujack's cue to leave the honeymooners alone.  :-)
