Adrienne first came to Salem in late 1986 in search of her big brother, Steve Johnson. There was only one problem: Steve didn’t even know he had a sister. He had been raised in an abusive home, and when he was about five years old, he was sent to an orphanage with his baby brother. He had tried to kill his father to stop him from beating his mother.

Steve lived the life of a loner (his baby brother was adopted, but Steve was raised in the orphanage), but had begun to fall for nurse Kayla Brady. Adrienne was able to find Steve, but tried to keep her distance. She eventually befriended Kayla (who helped Adrienne get a job at the Emergency Center), but Steve was suspicious of the young woman.

Not long after Steve learned who Adrienne really was, their parents (Jo & Duke) arrived in town and old wounds opened up. Adrienne and Steve tried to get Jo to leave Duke, but she refused. She thought it was safer for her children to stay where she was. Finally, they were able to convince her to leave, and she moved into a woman’s shelter.

Duke was furious and threatened Adrienne to find out where Jo was. When Adrienne refused to tell him, he raped his daughter. As Steve went looking for his sister, he heard a gunshot from her apartment. Inside, he found his sister with a gun in her hand—and their father was dead. Adrienne was in shock, so Steve wiped her fingerprints from the gun and replaced them with his own. He took the blame for killing Duke to spare his sister any more pain.

As Steve’s trial neared, Adrienne knew something wasn’t right. She struggled to remember what had happened that night so she could help her brother go free. One day as she was sitting and crying softly in the park, a handsome young man approached her. He was instantly drawn to the young woman and tried to talk to her, but she wasn’t receptive. He gently placed a handkerchief by her side and left her alone.
