Paulina first came to Bay City in February of 1990 (Judi assumed the role in July of 1991). She grew up lonely in foster homes, and came to town to find her family. A man by the name of Ken Jordan told her that her father was wealthy businessman Mackenzie Cory and helped her get close to Mac's family (Mac had died a year earlier).

Paulina had an uphill battle proving herself a true Cory, especially where her older sister Iris was concerned. Iris paid town bad boy Jake McKinnon to spy on Paulina and find out if she was telling the truth. Although he was involved with his ex-wife, Marley Hudson, at the time, Jake still took on the task and got romantically involved with Paulina.

Soon, Paulina learned what Jake was up to, but he began blackmailing her with information he said he had that proved she wasn't a Cory after all. One night in October, they got into a heated argument. They struggled over a gun that Jake had at his loft and Jake was shot. Paulina wasin shock and left Jake without calling for help. Jake survived, but was in a coma for several months. A mystery developed around who really shot Jake, and Marley stood trial for the crime.

During this time, Paulina managed to escape suspicion and tried to move on with her life. She began dating Congressman Grant Harrison and he even proposed. But by this time, Jake was awake and he remembered that Paulina was the shooter. Rather than turning her in, he blackmailed her for money. Paulina stood to inherit a small fortune when she got married. At first, Jake pressured her to marry Grant, but Paulina couldn't marry Grant under those circumstances. So Jake finally pressured her to marry him instead. They would stay married for six weeks, collect the money and then go their separate ways--and Jake would provide her with a signed paper clearing her of his shooting.
