Knock Knock
Simone
steeled herself. [If something's wrong with their marriage, I have to know.]
She
knocked on the door. It opened slowly. "Nick!" she said. "So good
to see you."
Nick
smiled. "Come in, come in."
Simone
walked through to the spacious living room. "Wow, you've done a lot with
this place since I was last here," she said appreciatively. "The new
coffee table looks great." It was green marble, very heavy. It set off the
black Persian rug nicely.
They
sat for a while, looking uncomfortable.
"I
need to talk to you," Nick started.
"I
have to ask you something," Simone said simultaneously. They laughed
awkwardly.
Nick
sighed, stretching sore shoulders. "I have to tell you about a certain
person we both know and love."
"Before
you do, there's something I need to ask," Simone said firmly.
"There's
a secret."
Simone
stood, upset. "I'm sorry, but I have to know, Nicola. Who was that lady I
saw you with last night?"
Nick
scratched the back of her head. "That's what I have to tell you, Simone.
The secret." She was silent for a moment, looking at the floor. She met
Simone's eyes finally. "That was no lady. That was my husband."
