Prime time for Big Bass on The Bend and Big Sam is early February through mid April for spawning fish. This is the time of year when the big giants come up shallow and become very aggressive toward any predator coming their way. Soft plastics, spinner baits, and stick baits are the ticket for attracting these trophy bass.
Schoolies and night time lunkers are the main attraction during the summer
months as both of these fabulous lakes play host to many tournaments for
professionals, clubs, and amateurs alike. Generally, three days prior
to and just following a full moon make for the best night time fishing.
Top water jerk baits, crankbaits, and poppers for the schoolies; big Texas
rigged worms for the arm breaking night time action.
Grass fishing has
really come on strong lately. "Dropping", or jigging in the thick
matted grass that is so plentiful on Rayburn and Toledo has almost become
a sport of its own. Year round, but especially good during the summer
and fall months, not much can beat the thrill of horsing a big bass out
of the grass. For this fishing, you will need an extra stout rod
and a heavy one ounce jig.
Fall brings with it some fine all around fishing. The top water bite is great, cranking, spinnerbaits, and worm fishing round out the action.
Winter months provide the cabin crazed angler with lots of fun spoon fishing. Jigging spoons along the tree and creek lines just gets better and better as the weather gets colder.
Catch and Release, PLEASE! for a mess of fish to eat, keeper size fish are plentiful. For those desiring wall hangers, replica trophy mounts are strongly recommended for all bass over five pounds, and don't forget...take lots of pictures!
