Dr.
Wayne Fisher Dorothy of Manhattan, Kansas will join the HSU School of
Music faculty as associate professor of music and director
of bands for the coming school year.
His
selection was announced by Dr. W. Craig Turner, president.
He
will direct both the Concert Band and Cowboy Band, succeeding Don Hanna,
who retired in December.
Since
2000, he has been a visiting professor of music education at Kansas State
University, Manhattan.
The
new HSU faculty member earned at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana,
the doctor of arts degree in music, with conducting as a primary area and
music history and musicology as a secondary area.
He
earned both the master of science degree (1987) in music education and
bachelor of science degree (1979) in music education/music from the
University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
He
comes to the HSU position with a solid record of experience at both the
university and secondary schools level.
He
was the director of bands at North Dakota State University, Fargo, North
Dakota from 1993 to 1999. He joined the North Dakota faculty in 1990 as
assistant director of bands, serving as acting director for the Spring
quarter, 1991, before his promotion to director.
He
was the assistant director of bands/doctoral assistant at Ball State
University, 1987 to 1990 and visiting professor of music education at
Morehead State University, Morehead, Kentucky, 1999-2000.
He
has been the director of bands at Tennessee High School, Bristol City
Schools, Tennessee, 1986-1987; Tullahoma High School, Tullahoma,
Tennessee, 1984-1986; Soddy-Daisy High School and Junior High School,
Hamilton County Schools, Tennessee, 1979-1981.
As a
band director in the public schools of Tennessee for eight years, he
taught instrumental music in four communities, ranging in population from
8,000 to 28,000. All band programs experienced significant growth, on the
order of 12 percent to 40 percent per school year. The school systems were
experiencing declines in enrollment during this period.
He
was honored as North Dakota Band Director of the Year in 1999.
