TEXAS RESOURCES & HELP

Most of the information found here is specific for San Antonio, Texas, but you should be able to find similar places in your area. I am originally from a small town on the coast of Texas and a lot of these services are not offered there. I know of families who lived in rural areas that moved to Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio so they would have better access to services. Ask the school district in your area what services might be comparable to these. If you live in another city or town I would love to receive other information to post here for Texas families.
Just e-mail me at autismzone@yahoo.com.

WHAT I RECOMMEND YOU DO TO GET ALL THE BENEFITS THERE ARE:

  1. Call Any Baby Can (ABC) and get a case worker 210-227-0141. On my second call I got a caseworker who asked me about 20 minutes worth of questions which she entered into her computer. She then put me on waiting lists for programs in the state of Texas. There are great programs out there that I did not know about and it would have taken me forever to apply for them, but she was able to do it all for me (free). They service children with disabilities from birth to 12 years old. They have a long list of services they can assist you with such as their resource library and their new support group for families of autism. For information on the support group ask for Mrs. Frances Ramirez. This is a great starting point.
  2. Call the ARC of Texas and explain your situation 210-490-4300. They can give you a case worker if you have a need. They will make sure you are on all the waiting lists (double check ABC) and get you in touch with respite care. They will even go to your ARD meetings with you.
  3. Contact In-Home and Family Support Services 210-731-1335. They are a part of the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. They will give you a caseworker if accepted and you will receive an application to fill out. They are a last resort financial assistance program. If you are not eligible for other programs (you may make too much money), they can assist you with services, medical equipment, software, training and such. A child with autism used to receive up to $3,600's a year to use for things not covered under your insurance. We don't qualify for this or anything -(the amount does not come close to covering things but everything will help). There may be a co-pay depending on how much money you make and how many people there are in your family. They also have a one-time grant and a special 599 fund. Their fiscal year runs September 1st-August 31st and there is a list to get on.
  4. Contact the San Antonio Autism Society and attend a meeting 210-308-8752, www.sanantonioautism.org. They meet every 3rd Saturday of the month at 9:30 am at the Northside Church of Christ, 16318 San Pedro Avenue, which is off of 281 North on the access road before the Thousand Oaks intersection. Baby-sitting is available if you call ahead. They do not meet during the summer.
  5. Try to get a referral to see Dr. Melissa Kempf in San Antonio or your area DAN doctor. Dr. Kempf: 1777 NE Loop 410, Ste. 200, San Antonio, TX 78217, ph: 210-822-3646, fax: 210-822-5242. She has been great and is actually my family's doctor--she is a family practice physician.
  6. If your are interested in ABA find a consultant. I have used Terri Locke, pager: 210-713-9533 (San Antonio). She initially helped me find my therapists, helps with school district problems, and all the problems that are involved with having an autistic child (including behavior problems). I also used Busy Bodies 210-545-2840 for gross motor/behavior therapy, Warm Springs for speech and occupational therapy (they do sensory integration), Stone Oak Therapy: http://www.stoneoaktherapy.com (210) 798-2273, TreeHouse Pediatrics: http://www.treehousepediatrics.com Atrium 85 NE Loop 410 Ste. 312, San Antonio, Tx 78215, Phone: 210-340-2627, 210-599-2030(NE side).
  7. Research Autism Web Pages. My favorite search engines are www.monstercrawler.com and www.ask.com. There you can type in any of your concerns or questions about autism. You should also check out my links page which has a lot of links. This was very helpful when Andrew was first diagnosed.
  8. Join an e-mail group for informational purposes. Many of their discussions will pertain to you and your family and some might just go over your head. When they start talking about medical test results and genes I get lost, but I am learning a lot about treatments. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/ to search for a group you like or create your own group. The groups I subscribe to are: Recovered Kids , Texas Autism Advocacy , Interven , Verbal Behavior , Autism Awareness Action , CAN Alert , Autism List , Autism-Mercury , Allergy-Related Vaccine Induced Autism. I get these sent in digest form. That way I can go to my email, right click on the digest for that day, choose "open in new window" on all of them, then disconnect from my e-mail (so I don't use hours or hold up my phone line) and then read them off-line. Yahoo also has clubs that are pretty much like the groups.
  9. Join a respite program such as: Respite Care of San Antonio, 210-737-1212, or CAMP 210-292-3575 email campmail@sprynet.com. Consider it social skills therapy for your autistic/pdd child.
Respite care of San Antonio offers: In-Home Care, Family Day Out, Parents Night Out, Mother's Day Out and the Davidson Respite House for emergency situations. When I spoke with them in August the price was $1.00 per child per hour (siblings are happily invited-still just $1.00 each for them) Friday nights 6:30 pm - Saturday 9:00am-4:00pm. I am going to use them for a couple of hours on Saturdays as good therapy for Andrew.
C.A.M.P. provides respite and recreational opportunities to children with disabilities. A nurse is present at all events. To join you must pay a $25.00 annual fee, complete an application, present documentation of a physical exam within the last 18 months, and provide a current 1040 (to receive discount coupons for respite). CAMP has Respite Weekends $185-$225 for children w/disabilities, $80-$125 for siblings, Parent's Night Out-free, Teen's Night Out-$10.00 per event, Emergency Respite with nursing care-sliding fee cost, and Emergency Respite for short-term emergencies-begin at $5.00 an hour.
  10. Learn all you can about special education law. Call the TEA Parent Support Hotline 1-800-252-9668 for any questions you have about the law or to file a grievance against your district. They gave me hints on how best to approach my school district when the district was not following the IDEA correctly (which they verified). Don't forget to get a copy of the IDEA from the ARC or download it from one of these places along with other informational documents: TEA , Special Education at About.com , Developing the Individual Education Plan , The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act , Wrights Law , or go to Ask.com and ask a question. Call 1-877-4ED-PUBS to request free IDEA information (they send a big book for FREE)!
  11. Learn all you can about the medical/biological aspects of autism – it is a neurological AND immune dysfunction.  Our kids may have food allergies/sensitivities(ELIMINATE THEM), thyroid problems (TREAT), viruses (MEDS), yeast & bacterial overgrowth in their intestines (PROBIOTICS/MEDS), leaky guts (TESTS), heavy metal problems (CHELATION/AVOID FUTURE EXPOSURE), nutritional deficiencies (SUPPLEMENTS), spikes in the EEGs-even though they are not having seizures (ANTI-EPILEPTIC DRUGS-ALT MEDS), abnormal MRI’s (STEROIDS), auditory processing problems (AIT)-we used Vicki Abreu for AIT, sensory issues (SENSORY INTEGRATION), and more.  There are treatments to help these problems and alleviate the stress on our kid’s systems.  This is overwhelming.  That is why a great Autism doctor is so important.  We use Dr. Kempf-DAN Doctor) & and Dr. Tomasovic.  You are the manager of your child’s health.  Keep up with the research findings and talk to other knowledgeable parents.  CALL Kirkmans for FREE “Guide to Scientific Nutrition for Autism & Related Conditions at 1-800-245-8282 or 1-888-KIRKMAN.

OTHER IDEAS

1. If your child is under 3 years old, look for your local ECI (Early Childhood Intervention) type program.
2. If your child is over 3 years old, call your school district, give your situation and see how they can help (you usually have to go through an evaluation through the school district). Read up on special education law and monitor your school district during this process to make sure they are treating you fairly. I would recommend bringing people with you during the ARD's and any meetings and evaluations. Good people to take are those that are knowledgeable and have your child's best interest in mind. Look for an advocacy group, the ARC, your personal therapists and consultants.
3. Check for the nearest Autism Society Organization and attend a meeting. At that first meeting, introduce yourself (they will probably ask you to stand up and introduce yourself) and say how you need help e.g..” My name is Michelle and my 3-year-old son Joe was diagnosed as PDD 1 month ago and I need help finding therapists and financial aid. I am also having trouble with my school district and am not sure what to do". The people there are generally helpful and nice as they have been in similar shoes at one time.
4. Check for support groups in your area for related disorders.
5. Try and find other parents in similar circumstances. They are a great resource and a good support tool.
6. Check with your insurance company to see what they can offer. My insurance company offered speech and occupational therapy but our son didn't like who was in our plan at that time, so we paid out of our pocket for in-home ABA & AVB. We have since found an acceptable speech pathologist and occupational therapist.  Some may have an “Educational” clause that can pay for some consulting and in-home therapy fees.
7. If you have family members, friends, neighbors, church members, or others that you are close to, encourage those relationships with your child. They can be trained on how best to work with your child and may be able to work one-on-one with them or give you respite time. Not all of them may be good with ABA or AVB therapy, but they might be good at a more SonRise/Option or Floortime approach.
8. Research Autism Web Pages. My favorite search engines are www.monstercrawler.com and www.ask.com. There you can type in any of your concerns or questions about autism. You should also check out my links page, which has a lot of links. This was very helpful when Andrew was first diagnosed.
9. Try to be creative in what you do. If you need to make therapy tools, try to make it yourself using magazine pictures, recycled products, and used toys to save money (check with other parents that have children that are older or more advanced and they may no longer need the tools or toys that you can use).
10. Find a good doctor, preferably someone with knowledge of the DAN (Defeat Autism Now) protocol. Have them run tests on your child to check for things you would feel comfortable with such as: fragileX, amino acids, metals, intestinal permeability, candida, yeast, mercury toxicity, food allergies, and such. A lot of our kids have medical/biological problems that need to be addressed. I would also suggest that you order the DAN protocol for yourself ($25.00's).   Dr. Kempf and Dr. Tomasovic,Neurologist in SA, are good and Dr. T has done autism studies with EEGs & MRIs 615-2333.
11. Pull out the phone book and look in the yellow pages under "Autism." Call any place that you think might be able to give you advice, information, or help. Be bold and ask how much their services are, how old are the people they serve, and do they have referrals or could you talk to a client about them.
12. Use the parent training and home trainers that your district SHOULD give you hours for.  Talk to other parents to try and find the best ones the district has or ask your therapists to apply to be a home trainer for your child's school district.  School districts are always short on Home Trainers and your therapists should not have trouble getting in - they require a background check.  Most of the districts in SA only have about 6-10 home trainers available.  Most families I have talked to get around 2 hrs a week of home/parent training. Other families do not receive any and don't know that they can fight for it.  I know of some families that get 10 hours a week of this
13. Use all of the services your district provides.  I use the Resource Center at NEISD to make things for my son-set up mainly for teachers in the district, but they will allow parent to come in if it is benefiting the district (helping a child in the district or one of their teachers). The Education Regional Service Centers have great resource rooms.
14. The districts must provide/pay for you to attend workshops/conventions to learn about autism.  Your Education Regional Service Center (call & request one) has books of workshops, but also keep your eyes out for others.  Request that your child’s teacher attend some of these (preferably with you).  I want to get my son’s teacher to attend a Mark Sundberg or Vince Carbone Workshop whether I have to pay for it or not.

Take care of yourself & your WHOLE family.  Remember that you are not alone.

There are other avenues to help your children and that is one of the most important reasons to network with other families. The parents that have lived this life are truly the experts.
