Dear Mom...
(This
is a letter I received from my daughter!)
The assault against the boxes continues on this end, and my pile of empties is steadily growing.
Obviously
the goal of the movers is to pack things in an unbreakable rather
than a logical manner, which means I have to unpack four
different boxes to get one complete set of china. What with the
unpacking, sorting and repacking, I have come to understand a new
meaning for the phrase
"depression glass"!!
Running
back and forth from wherever I am working to the laundry room to
punch the dryer button has kept me mobile since we've been here.
Why am I punching the dryer button, you ask?
Why to startle the starlings, of course!
It seems that a pair of starlings have been comfortably nested in the dryer vent for some time now and would really prefer not to relocate. While I can certainly understand their reluctance to move, I must insist on it anyway. We have had an on-going war since we moved in. There have been several pitched battles, ranging from sneak attacks to full frontal assaults, but I think I am beginning to prevail.
I must be constantly vigilant however. The laundry is located in the kitchen (where a pantry would normally be) and the dryer is vented outside the kitchen window. Since the windows must stay open, I can hear the starlings perched on the air conditioner as they let me know their displeasure. I can tell from the expressions on their little beaked faces as they whistle and trill at high volume, that they are using very colorul birdie language! I suppose it's a good thing I don't understand them!
Unfortunately,
scaring the starlings is the only reason for turning on the dryer
thus far. When my washer was connected, we discovered that the
valve leaked (all over the kitchen), so I have been unable to use
it since we moved in. The trips to the laundromat have become
somewhat tedious, though I suppose they are rather instructional
for the children. But it is rather disturbing when I have to
explain what is scrawled on the walls! I have hopes that they
will come and fix it soon.
At least that's what the air conditioner repairman told me when he came yesterday. The compressor is locked up and will have to be replaced. He hopes to be able to get to it sometime next week. In the meantime, the windows remain open, thus allowing me a certain tactical advantage in the birdie battle.
Perhaps when the repairman comes next week he will be able to unplug the exterior faucet in the front so we can wash the cars. They are covered with pollen from the many blooming things (which are also causing considerable upper-respiratory distress since we can't close the windows and turn on the air-conditioner), since we have to park them in the driveway due to all the boxes in the garage. I hope we can get the pollen off before it becomes a permanent feature of the paint!
On the up side, my toe is beginning to heal nicely. I stubbed it rather severely one early morning in the kitchen. It seems that the fascia on the kitchen cabinet kick board had come unglued overnight and fallen off onto the floor. In the dark early hours, I didn't see it and nearly fell on my face tripping over it. We are learning to walk around them however, (another has since fallen off as well). They do make an interesting addition to the kitchen obstacle course.
Well,
the children are beginning to wander the house in search of food,
so I guess I'll get off and send this to you before they start
chewing on the furniture. Hope to hear from you soon.
