Video Killed the Radio Star
In the past, many famous Musicians sold themselves solely
on their talent, and the caliber of the music that they played. The
medium through which this music was presented was primarly by ear, and
there was little oppurtunity to present themselves through an image. As the
dawn of new technologies allowed artists to present themsleves more visually,
fans interests shifted more towards their presented image, and less towards
their musical value. This site represents our view of how image is
replacing talent in our mainstream "music" industry, and how
'Video killed the Radio Star'
Looking at todays artists, you can quickly notice how important to
their success image has become. Girls are in love with boy bands and
male artists, but for their extraordinary looks, as extraordinary talent is absent.
Pop bands such as 'Simple Plan' dont need to know
how to play their instruments, because they wear 'Atticus' shirts instead.
Musicians such as Jimi Hendrix inspired so many to learn to play the guitar,
wheareas Blink 182 inspired fans to wear baggy pants and 'Hurley' t-shirts.
Likewise, Blink's guitar skills are virtually non-existent,topping charts
with riffs you could teach the average monkey in a week.
Other popular artists claim to be doing their own thing, going against
todays popular music, and avoiding cliche images. These artists however, are equally
as image-conscious, using their rebeliousness against current 'Pop' as their image,
and sell their records for much the same reasons. Pictured above is the
catchy and entertaining new band, 'the hives'. At a first glance and listen,
they are distinguishable for their ingenuity, and originality. However, a little research
shows that 'the hives' took much the same path to stardom as
our other boy-bands, with one man selecting members and constructing the
band, telling them what to play, and how to dress, thus eliminating the
possibilty of them deserving credit for the talent and
originality that they display.
And clearly, it is not hard to understand what artists
such as Britney Spears use to get herself front and center.
