Previous VA 101's: VA 101 #1: Created in 1923 as a new route. At first it ran from VA 10 (curr US 58 Bus) Virginia Beach north to Ft. Story. By 1928 it continued around Cape Henry and went back to US 117/VA 10 (curr US 58) Norfolk. VA 101 was replaced in 1929 by VA 500 and VA 502. Today it is VA 166, US 13, US 60, and old VA 305.
VA 101 #1 (1928)
VA 101 #2: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from US 411 (curr US 58) Rose Hill south to the Tennessee Line. It was renumbered as the original VA 62 in July 1933. Today it is SR 744.
VA 101 #3: Appeared in July 1933, as a renumbering of part of US 11. Ran from US 11 to VA 100 in the Pulaski area. See the scan at right. In 1942 most of VA 101 was replaced by the new VA 100 alignment, reducing VA 101 to less than a mile. VA 101 was oblitherated by I-81 passing through, by 1961. Today perhaps a piece of frontage road still exists on this route.

Adjustments: None
Posting: Fully posted. Cutouts up in Bluefield. Also, strange oversized VA 102 signs in triangles exist in Bluefield. Dave reported to me in June 2002 that bizarre interstate cutouts with 102 in them exist now. Thankfully he sent along the picture at the top of the page
From Nick Britton:
VA 102 has no directional signage in Pocahontas coming off CR 644 and unless you know to take a left, there's no way to know where VA 102 heads. The first reassurance sign is about 1/2 mile past the intersection.

Comment: VA 102 dips briefly in WV between US 19 and Pocohantas.
Previous VA 102's: VA 102 #1: Appeared in 1923 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 10 (curr US 58-421) Gate City south to Tennessee. In 1929, this was renumbered as VA 108 #2. Today it is part of US 23.

Previous VA 103's: VA 103 #1: Created in 1923. Ran from VA 10-12 Suffolk south to then-NC 30. This was replaced in 1929 by VA 505. Today it is VA 32.

The second piece became US 58 at that time, as well.
VA 104  not currently assigned
Previous VA 104's: VA 104 #1: Appeared as a new route in 1923. Ran from VA 10 (curr US 460) Appomattox to Vera. By 1928 VA 104 was extended north to VA 13 (curr US 60) Mt Rush; also in 1928, VA 104 was extended south a few miles below Appomattox. All of VA 104 was renumbered as part of VA 306 in 1929. Today it is part of VA 24, a sliver of VA 131 and some of SR 727.
VA 104 #2: Created in 1929, as a new numbered route. Ran from VA 11 (curr US 58A-421 JCT) Pennington Gap to Stone Creek. VA 104 was extended to west to the Kentucky state line in 1930-31. It was renumbered as VA 65 in July 1933. Today it is part of US 421.
VA 104 #3: Appeared in July 1933 as a renumbering of original VA 220. Ran from VA 103 Claudeville to NC 104. This was downgraded to SR 773 between 1948-50.
VA 104 #4: Appeared in 1966 as a new route, running from US 17 (US 17-US 17 Bus JCT) along the Dismal Canal to US 13 Military Hwy, all in Chesapeake, all as Dominion Blvd. I-464 was eventually cosigned on VA 104 between US 13 and I-64. In December 2001, US 17 was rerouted along this route, and VA 104 was eliminated. VA 104 was one of a few routes in Virginia with mile markers. Back in the early 80's VA 104 was posted as part of the Ocean Hiway. The 2002-04 Official Map still shows this as part of VA 104. When I drove by the south end of this in January 2004, there were no VA 104 signs present.

Posting: Fully posted. A VA 106 in a circle sign existed between VA 5 and US 60 in the 90's
Comment: VA 106 should be signed below US 460 to at least I-95...

Previous VA 107's: VA 107 #1: Created in 1923, apparently as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 10 Cumberland Gap south to Tennessee. This was eliminated in 1929 by US 25E, which had squeezed in on VA 107 in 1927. Today it is the US 58 approach into Tennessee.

Comment: VA 109 runs through the Petersburg battlefield property and stops at the back gate to Ft. Lee.  Battlefield can only be accessed through the toll booth off VA 36.  The battlefield road from there to US 301 is one-way.
Previous VA 109's: VA 109 #1: Appeared in 1923. Ran from VA 10 (curr US 11) Dublin north to Staffordsville. VA 109 became part of VA 213 in 1929. Today it is part of VA 100.

Creation: Appeared in 1967 in its current form. Assigned to a freeway route that had been unnumbered for years. This is the 4th VA 110.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Fully posted; A. Froehlig notes in June 2005 a US 110 sign at the circle just west off the Arlington Bridge, on a brown park service sign.
Comments:Connector from I-66 to I-395. Access to Iwo Jima Memorial, Netherlands Carillion, Arlington Cemetery, and the Pentagon. This may have been the alignment of US 240 when it was in Virginia in the 30's.
Previous VA 110's: VA 110 #1: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from US 11 Abingdon south 10 miles towards Tennessee. In 1930-31, VA 110 was extended down to the state line. This was renumbered as VA 77 in July 1933. Today it is VA 75.
VA 110 #2: Appeared in July 1933, as a replacement for VA 211. Ran from VA 102 (curr SR 787) near Radford to VA 8 Riner. This was downgraded to SR 658 between 1945-47.
VA 110 #3: Appeared as a dotted line on VDOT maps from at least 1950-53. Proposed to connect US 1 Alexandria near Slater Ln east across Washington St. (curr VA 400) to the Potomac River. Perhaps this was a potential new river crossing. At any rate, it does not appear that any part of this VA 110 ever actually got built.

Adjustments: None
Posting: Fully posted; one cutout still up WB (verified Nov. 2003)
Comment: A slow bypass of Christiansburg. I'm surprised this wasn't changed to US 460 ALT in the late 40's.
Previous VA 111's: VA 111 #1: Appeared in 1923. Ran from VA 11 (curr US 19-460 JCT) Claypool Hill to VA 114 (curr VA 83) Grundy. This was renumbered as VA 126 in 1929. Today it is all part of US 460.
VA 111 #2: Appeared in 1929. Was in 2 pieces: 1. US 11 Meadowview and then 9 miles NW 2. US 19 near Rosedale SE to the Russell-Washington County Line. In 1932, VA 111 was extended NW to just west of Haysi over what had been VA 125, with a large gap between Haysi and Council. In July 1933, the 3 piece VA 111 was renumbered as VA 80.

Previous VA 112's: VA 112 #1: Appeared in 1923, running from VA 106 (curr US 19-58 ALT split) Hansonville to VA 11 (curr VA 71-US 19 Bus JCT) Lebanon. This was replaced in 1929 by current US 19. See the scan at right.

Total Length: 1 mile
ROUTE LOG
US 11E, US 19, US 421: 0 - 0
US 11, US 19: 1 - 1
Creation: goes back to at least 1988, but does not appear in the 1961 Washington County Map. (Bristol was not on insets as late as 1987). Cutout signs looked to be 70's vintage when I drove VA 113 in 2000. At one point this was mainline US 11-19-58, but I don't know if it was immediately so. This is the 4th VA 113.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Fully posted. Some cutouts remain. In August 2003, HB Elkins posted to MTR that he could not find any VA 113 signs and all Bristol cutouts were replaced (so sad!).
Comment: this route doesn't serve much purpose if you ask me.
Previous VA 113's: VA 113 #1: Created in 1923. Ran from VA 11 (curr VA 63-270 JCT) St. Paul to Dante. This was renumbered as VA 123 in 1929. Today it is part of VA 63. See scan at right.

VA 114
From: US 11 Radford (Pulaski County)
To: US 460 Belmont (Montgomery County)
Total Length: 9 miles
ROUTE LOG
US 11: 0 - 0
MO-PU LINE: 2.5 - 2.5
US 460 Bus: 6 - 8.5
US 460: 0.5 - 9
Creation: Appeared in July 1933. Was in 2 pieces 1.Ran from Prices Fork, through Blacksburg to US 11 (curr US 11-US 220A jct) 2. A short stub above US 460 (curr US 220A-221-460 jct) at Bonsack. This replaced all of VA 209 and had some new routing. This is the 3rd VA 114.
Adjustments: By 1937, the long piece of VA 114 was truncated to US 220 Daleville
In 1938 VA 114 was extended west to US 11 Radford.
Between 1945-47, VA 114 east was truncated to VA 311 near Catawba, leaving behind SR 779. Piece number 2 was downgraded to SR 604. VA 114 was also rerouted onto its Peppers Ferry Blvd. route, leaving behind SR 685. (yes, 114 ran through the ammunition dump) This left a multiplex with US 460 to get to Blacksburg.
VA 114 east was truncated to US 460 (curr US 460 Bus) in 1951, leaving behing SR 785.
VA 114 was extended to just east of the new US 460 Bypass in 2002.
Posting: Fully posted; In May 2005 I spotted a 114 shield painted in the left lane of US 460 Bus WB.
Comment: VA 114 actually extends a little east of the new US 460 Bypass, to an unnumbered frontage road. Rush Wickes reports this is for future expansion east. I presume it would connect to I-73 at some point.
The old Blacksburg to Catawba routing is pretty narrow, and fun to drive.
Previous VA 114's: VA 114 #1: Appeared in 1923, running from VA 11 (curr VA 158) Coeburn to VA 111 (curr US 460) Grundy. In 1929, this was renumbered as VA 122 from Coeburn to Clintwood and VA 121 the rest to Grundy. Today it is part of VA 72, VA 63, and VA 83.

Comments: I drove this in October 2001. It is mostly residential now.
Previous VA 115's: VA 115 #1: Appeared in 1923, running from VA 11 (curr US 23 Bus) Appalachia west to KY state line. In 1929 this was renumbered as VA 106. (this became the original route of US 23 by 1930). Today it is VA 160.
VA 115 #2: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Originally ran from US 21 Speedwell west to Cedar Springs. In 1930-31, VA 115 was extended in both directions to run from US 11 near Rural Retreat to the S. Holston River (halfway between US 21 and Ivanhoe). There was a tiny break in the route between Rural Retreat and Cedar Springs. In 1932 VA 115 was extended north from Rural Retreat to US 21 (curr US 52) near Favonia. This section and Rural Retreat to Cedar Springs became VA 90 and the rest became VA 91 all in July 1933. Today it is all of current VA 90, plus SR's 680, 749, and 690.

Posting: Fully Posted; one cutout left on VA 116 NB between VA 101 and US 11A-460. In the early 90's cutouts existed in Roanoke.
Comment: VA 116 had an exit with I-81 until its demotion, which took place when VA 419 was extended north to its current end. The mountain crossing south of Roanoke is quite twisty.
Previous VA 116's: VA 116 #1: Created in 1923, running from VA 11 (curr. US 23 Bus-58 ALT jct) Big Stone Gap to VA 10 (current US 23-58-421) Clinchport. This was renumbered as VA 106 in 1929. Today it is mostly US 23 and also SR 871.

Previous VA 119's: VA 119 #1: Appeared between 1924-27 as new routing, from VA 11 (curr US 23 Bus-VA 74 jct) Norton north to the KY state line at Jenkins. This was renumbered as VA 120 in 1929. Today it is US 23. See scan at right.

VA 119A: Mentioned in the September 1930 CTB Minutes. It does not give any clue as to where this was exactly, but it would have been near Appalachia.

Comment: Drove this route in October 2001. Not much to it. Strangely it becomes SR 1006 for a couple blocks before reaching SR 610. Incidentally, SR 610 west to Wytheville is a good route that probably could be upgraded to VA 121.
Chris E. notes this is one of the few current US extensions that does not touch its parent (VA 311 also now falls in this category).
VA 121 - 1941/42
Previous VA 121's: VA 121 #1: Appeared in 1923, running from VA 12 (curr US 58 Bus) Franklin south to then-NC 485 (curr US 258). This was renumbered as part of extended original VA 108 between 1924-27. It later became US 117 and US 158. Today it is part of US 258.

Comments: Serves Booker T. Washington NM and Smith Mountain Lake. Rand McNally implies a VA 122 Bus. in Moneta, but the old route was downgraded to two SR 9xx routes.
Previous VA 122's: VA 122 #1:Appeared in 1923. Ran from at least VA 12-31 (curr US 1-VA 47 jct) South Hill south to the NC Line. The 1923 map is vague whether VA 122 continued north to VA 31 (curr SR 712) near McKenney. Either way, this VA 122 became VA 31 between 1924-27. Today it is part of US 1.
VA 122 #2: Appeared between 1924-27 as a renumbering of part of original VA 31. Ran from VA 12 (curr US 58) Edgerton to VA 31 (curr US 1) near McKenney. This was renumbered as VA 402 in 1929. Today it is SR 712.

Posting: fully posted; error US 123 sign existed briefly at US 1 SB, but has been replaced; VA 738 sign at SR 738.   Old "white border" shields at VA 243 in Vienna.  SR 123 & SR 236 signs at VA 236; in Fairfax. The route number signage in the City of Fairfax is odd in general: normal-sized direction and arrow markers with smaller-than-usual shields.  These destinctive assemblies are used all over the city.
In May 2004, Dan F reports an interesting posting from VA 383:
I was on University Dr. (VA 383) in Fairfax approaching VA 123 and there was a small sign, presumably posted by George Mason University that had trailblazers for I-66 and I-495 as well as a VA 123N shield and a VA 123S shield (which denoted north and south). All the shields looked normal and used Federal Highway fonts, though they were white-on-maroon (maroon or green) to match the GMU sign.

This is the only example I've heard of where non-standard colors were used on route shields in Virginia.
In summer 2002 I spotted a circle 123 sign on SR 610 NB.
The last VA 123 cutout I knew of, at SR 645 EB Burke Lake, was replaced about 2000. Fairfax cutouts made it as far as least 1969.
Comment: This is a mostly urban route now. In a move that makes no sense, VA 123 goes to DC instead of VA 120. You turn left at VA 120 to do this. Was this stub VA 9Y in the late 30's?
Previous VA 123's: VA 123 #1: Appeared in 1923. Ran from VA 12 (curr US 58) Mouth of Wilson south to then-NC 68 (curr NC 16). This was renumbered as VA 129 in 1929.
VA 123 #2: Appeared in 1929 as a renumbering of original VA 113. Ran from VA 11 (VA 63-270 jct) St. Paul to VA 121 (curr VA 83) Fremont, with a small break in between. VA 123 was extended over what was VA 124 to 6 miles west of Dungannon in 1932. This was renumbered to VA 63 and VA 66 (curr VA 65) in July 1933.
VA 123 #3: Appeared in July 1933 as a renumbering of VA 217. Ran from VA 114 to Catawba Sanatorium. This was renumbered to current VA 320 in 1940-41.

Previous VA 124's:
VA 124 #1: Appears around 1924 as a new state highway. Originally ran as a stub north off VA 12 (curr VA 92) Chase City. In Feb. 1925, VA 124 was extended north out to 11 miles from Chase City. In May 1926, VA 124 was extended north again to VA 323 (curr VA 40) Lunenburg. VA 124 was replaced by an extended original VA 201 by 1928. Today VA 124 is part of VA 49.
VA 124 #2: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 11 (US 58 ALT) Castlewood west for 4 miles. In 1930-31, VA 124 west was extended to 6 miles west of Dungannon. All of VA 124 was replaced by an extended VA 123 in 1932. Today it is part of VA 65.
VA 124 #3: Appeared in July 1933. Ran from VA 8 (curr US 460) Rich Creek to then-WV 24 at Peterstown, WV. This was a replacement for VA 216. This VA 124 was eliminated by an extended US 219 in 1938.
VA 124 #4: Appeared in 1938 as a replacement for VA 219, which was a short stub off VA 30 just west of West Point. This was downgraded to SR 635 between 1942-44.

Comments: This is the Kings Highway. The Nanesmond River Bridge is very old and narrow. A. Froehlig reports that this bridge is now closed down to all traffic, and no one has the funds to repair or replace the bridge. Unless one has to go from Chuckatuck to Driver and no further, detouring around using Crittenden Rd (old VA 192) and US 17 isn't a huge deal.
Previous VA 125's: VA 125 #1: Appeared between 1924-28 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 12 (curr VA 91) Lodi to VA 10 (curr US 11) Meadowview. This was renumbered as part of VA 112 in 1929. See the scan at right.
VA 125 #2: Appeared in 1929 running from US 19 Rosedale to 4 miles past Council. This had been original VA 118. In 1930-31 VA 125 became a 2-piece route, adding a piece from VA 121 (curr VA 83) Haysi to 3 miles SW (previously unnumbered). Both pieces became part of an extended VA 111 in 1932. Today it is part of VA 80.
VA 125 #3: Appeared in July 1933 as a renumbering of VA 300 #1. Ran from US 29 to US 58 (curr VA 51) in the Danville area. Around 1941, the southernmost mile became part of US 29 ALT (curr US 29 Bus). Between 1954-56, the rest was decommissioned to an unnumbered route.
