About Graham Ackerman

My name is Graham Ackerman. I am 17 years old and I am a gymnast at Cascade Elite Gymnastics in Mountlake Terrace, Washington but train with the University of Washington Gymnastics team.

I go to Roosevelt High School where I am a senior ('01!!! '01!!!). My hobbies include gymnastics, hanging out with friends, playing on the Internet, going to movies and listening to music. Click here to see picture of me (I'm the far right in the black shirt).

Some of my favorites:

Food: Anything! Especially Mexican, Italian and Chinese.
Movie: Austin Powers
Music: Euro trash :)
Magazine: Gym Stars
Competition: 2000 Elite National Qualifier
Competition on tape: 1987 Soviet Nationals, 1997 International Jr., 1998 Europeans, 1996 Europeans, 1987 Moscow News, 1995 Worlds, 1997 Worlds.

Now here's some of how I did at my Regional championships held in the middle of April of '98. I ended up winning this meet, but I was not at my best. I scored a 48.325 which is higher than my state score where I thought I had a better meet.

I started the meet on on pommels!! In warmup I made my mount (which is the hardest thing for me) all three times I tried it! Then the competition comes around, and I fall :( I was really dissapointed. But I finished my routine without any other "major" deductions (7.05- yuck!!!). Rings was next, and I did a fairly good routine. I'm now working on a new "D" dismount (front double full) so my score will go up a lot. I had two hard judges that gave me a 6.95. Vault was better. I stuck my handspring and took a small step on my front tuck 1/2 (8.825). On Parallel Bars, I did a good routine. In warmup, I didn't have time to do my giant or stuz, so I was a bit nervous going into it. I made my back toss to handstand :o) and my giant was a little loose, but my stuz was really low!!!! I finished my routine and got a 7.85 which I can definately improve on now since I have added another back toss and I have cleaned up my form a little. High bar is now probably one of my top 2 events (the other if floor). I made up uprise 1/1 and my stalder blind to handstand, and caught my endo-1/1 to dorsel. I use the word "caught" because in this skill the arm come around the body, twisting the shoulders into dorsel or "eagle" grip. It is also a risky move sometimes when you are not quite square to the bar. But this was one of my best ones ever! The rest of my routine (stoop, 2 inverts, double layout) was pretty clean and I got a very generous 8.8. Floor was bad. I messed up my first pass where instead of doing a front full, I only did a front 1/2, and got .2 for my pass instead of .5. My other passes were ok, but my dismount was really bad. I didn't fall but I had to take two big steps back. The result- an 8.85 on the event I got a 9.5 on at state. :( I'm glad to be back now, and hopefully I can improve on this meet at JO Nationals on May 6th-8th. Wish me luck...

I guess I'll tell you about my state meet this last weekend (March 26th). It was the second time I won state, but this time, I felt really prepared and ready for it. Here are the routines I competed:

FX
whip, 1 1/2, full
2 1/2, front 1/2
rudi, front 1 1/4
2 1/2, front

PH
same as last JO Nationals at bottom :(

SR
back uprise straddle L, V sit, press (sometimes lock arm), 2 back giants, back uprise straddle L, press, double back (hopefully full out or double pike 1/2 out by end of season).

Vault
Pike front (just tried a pike front 1/2 on Wednesday 3/31 maybe will compete it at Regionals?!?)

PB
Cast straddle L, press, back toss hand, V sit, giant hand, stutz hand, V sit, moy, double back off end.

HB
Uprise 1/1
Stalder blind, endo 1/1 to dorsal
hop, free hip
blind
stoop, invert, invert
double layout

That's what I did at State on 3/27/99. I am sort of working new routines and parts on most events. But one skill that I have neglected since summer was a 3 1/2 twist on FX. It's a super E, and I was making them on a tumble strip. I would really like to start working it again because I don't think many people (if any) have competed it sucessfully ever.

Here is my report on how I did at J.O Nationals in Battle Creek, Michigan on May 8th-10th.

I started off the meet on Friday with the Preliminaries/Team Competition. I had an up and down meet on Friday. I hit Pommels, Vault, High Bar and Floor really well, but I had pretty bad Parallel Bars and Rings.

I did not think that I had a score that was high enough to get into All Around Finals. When the results were posted, I was amazed! I was in 47th place after having a so-so meet. The top 54 gymnasts from Prelims advanced to All Around Finals, and I was one of them. I also found out that I was in 5th on Floor (the top 6 on each event make Event Finals).

In the All Around Final, I competed better the the previous day. My All Around score was around .5 better on Saturday (47.575). I missed Parallel Bars, Pommel Horse, and Rings, but my other three events were cleaner that Friday. By the end of the meet, I was in 39th place. My best score was on Floor with a 9.45.

Event Finals were my last meet of J.O. Nationals. I was only in Floor Finals, so I wanted to make the most of that! I was up second after my friend, Zach Roberts. He had a great set, and scored a 9.75! I went up next and scored a 9.4. Scott Weber was next and he scored a 9.8 (which eventually won him the gold). I was in 4th by the end of the meet.

Here are my routines that I competed at J.O. Nationals:
