He is also the reigning European Champion. Alexei first made his debut at the 1995 Atlanta Invitational. He placed 8th there. Alexei did not compete at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but won the Russian National Championships the next year. He was also the Vault, Parallel Bars and High Bar Champion at the 1997 Moscow Stars of the World tournement. At the 1997 World Championships, Alexei shocked many people by being Russia's top finisher in 2nd place. He also won a bronze medal for the team event. His only event final was vault were he placed 5th after missing his roundoff-half on- layout half off. Alexei won his second straight National Championship in March this year. He defeated his closest rival, Yuri Kryukov by a point (56.2- 55.2). He also won event titles on Floor, Pommel Horse and Parallel Bars. The 1998 American Cup proved to be a strong competition. Present were Alexei Bonarenko, Blaine Wilson, Dimitry Karbonenko, Sergei Kharkov and Wei Yang. Alexei finished 2nd behind Wilson with a score of 55.800. In the 1998 Moscow Stars of the World, Alexei won the All Around with the same point total as his 1998 Russian National Championship victory. He also wraped up a gold on the Parallel Bars and two silvers on Floor and Rings, respectivly. At the 1998 Cottbus Cup in Cottbus, Germany, Alexei demonstrated the talent and drive that earned him the 97 World Championships All Around silver medal. At Cottbus, he won the gold medal on Floor, silver on Parallel Bars, 4th place on Rings and 8th place on Vault. Alexei finished 3rd at the 1998 French International in the All Around behind winner and home town favorite Dimitry Karbonenko and World Champion, Ivan Ivankov. He might have even won if he had not scored a 7.85 on High Bar. But he came back the next day and took the silver on Floor, bronze on Vault and 4th on Rings. At the 1998 Sagit Cup in Vancouver, Canada, Alexei won Floor, took the bronze on Rings and 5th on Vault. Russia placed a dissapointing 2nd at the 1998 European Championships. But Alexei proved that he is one of the World's best gymnasts by winning the All Around over Dimitry Karbonenko and Alexei Nemov. In finals, he won the gold on Parallel Bars, silvers on Floor (again) and Pommel Horse, and 4th place on Rings.
