Tied by Ard Stetts
Ard’s Nine Three was tied by Salmonfly.Net Contributing Fly Tyer Ard Stetts. You can see more of Ard's flies at The Flies of Ard Stetts . See his notes below: Ard's Notes: The pattern “Ard’s Nine Three” is my simple variation of the Nine Three, (circa 1930) a fly first tied by Dr. J. Hubert Sanborn of Waterville Maine to imitate the local fresh water smelt. The first land locked salmon caught by Mr. Sandborn on his creation weighed nine pounds three ounces. In my adaptation of the good doctors’ pattern I have added a ostrich butt & crystal flash topping to make the fly a little more elegant. The addition of the white belly (bucktail) makes its appearance more similar to our many salmon fry and fingerlings that are very abundant in most of the trout & char waters here in south central AK. That gives my spin on the nine three, I catch many large steelhead, rainbow & char on the fly. |
