Weighted Fritz Soldier Palmer
This pattern was originated and tied by Leon Guthrie of Galashiels, Scotland. Leon wrote that it is catching a lot of salmon in Scotland and he thought perhaps our steelhead would go for it. The fly is tied with an underbody of deer hair to give it buoyancy for fishing it dry. Leon wrote, "it also catches salmon with the non-weighted version (which see); of course with the deer hair under the red fritz material it makes it a very floating fly indeed. I have tied them from size 10 hook and some larger double hooks. It's pretty effective on a bright day; so simple to make. With the sharp takes, the pattern must get the salmon pretty annoyed to take it so violently." You can see many more flies from Leon by visiting his page on this site, The Flies of Leon Guthrie.
