Leons Baby Squid
Originated and Tied by Guthrie Fly

Leons Baby Squid

Note: Leon did not yet send the pattern but wrote the following about his newest pattern. Before reading on, take a look at another version of this fly, developed by Leon that utilizes a coat of hot wax for more realism. See Hot Melt Glue Version of Baby Squid.

Here is a new Pattern Design that is proving extremely effective on Steelhead and Rainbow at my local Clerklands Fishery and now everybody is going nut's over them here! Of course the juvenile squid is one of the natural diets of the Atlantic Salmon so I thought I'd try this design. The pattern is very easy to make and uses the Luminous Metal Bead made by Veniard for the eye. The tail is simply white antron body wool; the body is peach coloured knitting wool or you can use white wool also. The 4 tentacles are white chenille and the Nylon tipped is attached (Coloured for photo clarity only. I just put a loop on the end only 12" inches so I can just do a quick loop to loop connection. If you are fishing in the evening light you can also enhance the effect of the luminous eye by shining a torch on it prior to casting into the darkened depths for that added attraction. There is also some lead wire on the hook shank. It is tyed on a Kamasan B800 Classic Extra Long Shank Size 8.

This one you ought to try you will not be disappointed; Very Effective! Leon

Note: Also see Leons Tips for Using a Hot Melt Glue Gun .

This pattern was originated and tied by Leon Guthrie of Galashiels, Scotland. You can see more of his originals at The Flies of Leon Guthrie.
