Winter Orange (Combs) |

Winter Orange is one of the Trey Combs Winter Series flies that he writes about in his fine book, Steelhead Fly Fishing and as noted to the introduction to the series in Salmonfly.Net. He notes that he has had excellent results with this fly tied with a wing of orange polar bear mask, so much so, he says that winter steelhead have come from considerable distance to hit the fly! To see more flies in the series, return to Favorite Flies for Steelhead. Notes: Trey Combs writes in Fly Fishing for Steelhead that the Winter Series flies are designed to sink well in deep pools, attract well in soft currents, but swim upright, without turning over in heavy tailouts. He ties the slim body with single strand floss over flat silver tinsel that causes it to glow when wet. Tie the bunches of marabou for the wings in three parts, each shorter then the one before with the butts covered by the collar.
