John Glaspy Flies

All of the Rotapixies use the same general tying steps. Pixies are the same except that they are tied on a regular rather than propeller hook.  Tying these flies is essentially the same as tying a wooly bugger.

1. Place a finished propeller hook with the desired color propeller and cone in the vise.

2. Tie in the marabou tail, length a little longer than the overall length of the hook. Because the tails are layered different colors of marabou, I find it easier to wet the marabou before tying each feather in place. Trim the butts where the lead and epoxy begin on the hook shank, to eliminate the bump on the shank of the finished propeller hook made by the lead wire and epoxy. Put several strands of Krystal Flash on each side of the tail and clip to varying lengths, no longer than marabou.

3. Tie in a length of UV Polar Chenille at the back of the fly long enough to palmer the hook shank and store in material holder.

4. Dub a body for the entire length of the hook shank.  Leave thread at the front of the fly behind the cone.

5. Palmer the UV Polar Chenille forward over the body and tie off behind cone.

6. Tie on a small piece of chenille for the egg head, wrap the egg and tie off.
