Webmaster Notes: This fly probably is mentioned in several books, but I have two that write about it in addition to the Trey Combs book mentioned by Bill. In Flies for Steelhead, Dick Stewart and Farrow Allen write that this fly is very effective fished for summer steelhead in shallow tailouts using the greased line technique. Trey Combs writes about this fly in an earlier book, Steelhead Fly Fishing and Flies that although Harry Lemire created this fly for slightly off-colored water during the summer, he came to believe in this fly for all seasons after it proved to be effective for him in the winter. These two books also will tell you more about Black Diamond.
