We get invited to a private park on Widbey Island by the Kamehameha Alumni group each year.  Take the ferry ride over in the morning and spend the day relaxing with local folk.  During the morning low tide we go clamming for the horse clams in the sandy area, and the regular type in the rocky area.

The regular type are pretty big, but the horse clams are even bigger!  They are pretty hard to catch as you have to dig deep and really fast before they get a chance to bury themselves deeper.  Probably an average of 1 horse clam per 4 tries is what we get.

You need to find the breathing hole, then dig around it and then come up to the clam from the side before he digs down deeper.  Lots of fun trying to outwit them, although given our average, I don't know who the dumber one is...

Al gets the horse clam.

Anna bags a big one.

It's a big one Dan!  No, wait, it's only a rock!

See the hole?  That means a horse clam lives here.

Claire shows off one of our catch.
