2005-2006
Fort Worth Christian Varsity Basketball Schedule and Summary
2/24/06 Houston
Westbury Christian -
TAPPS State Semi-Finals (Neutral gym,
University of Texas, Tyler) - For the second year in a row,
my Fort Worth Christian Cardinals team fell short of winning a state
title by losing in the TAPPS 5A State Semi-Finals. Also for the second
year in a row, we fell to Houston Westbury Christian, who for the
second year went onto winning the state championship. We played Westbury
tough. We were tied at the half
and went into the fourth quarter with a four point lead, but ended
up losing 54-52 on a buzzer-beater, last second shot. We should
have won. I think I choked with only 9 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists,
4 steals and a block. I'll be back next year though. I am going to
miss the twelve seniors graduating off the team this year. It's the
best team I've ever been on. I will definitely miss you guys on the
court next year, but keep an eye me, I will be a force next year for
our Cardinals. Good luck to all you guys wherever you go next year.
2/18/06 Tomball
Concordia Lutheran -
TAPPS Region Playoff (Neutral gym, Temple)
- We won our second TAPPS 1-5A Bi-District Playoff game against a
tough Tomball Concordia Lutheran team, 72-50. The game was much closer
than the score would lead you to think. Concordia was a tall, strong,
athletic team that could shoot. My team just played at another level
this game. Everyone contributed and we had four player in double digits.
I started the game scoring the first 4 points but then picked up two
quick fouls and had to sit until mid second quarter. As soon as I
came back in, I scored again and then picked up another foul. I
ended up playing way less than half the game but still chipped in
with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. We need two more wins.
I think my team is ready and definitely good enough.
2/11/06 Tyler
Grace Community - TAPPS Bi-District Playoff (Home)
- I came out flat this game and played a pathetic first quarter on
offense and defense because of it. I got into a nice flow from there
though. Tyler Grace jumped out on us 12-2 but we came back and won
55-35. I had 12 points, with 5 rebounds, an assist, 4 steals and a
block.
2/8/06 Denton
Liberty Christian* (Neutral gym, LD Bell)
- We won our TAPPS 1-5A District First-Place Playoff game against
co-district champs Denton Liberty Christian, 40-37, to secure a home
court advantage to start regionals as we make a run at a state title.
I only scored 5 points, with 6 rebounds, 2 assists and three steals,
but I did a better job defending against Michael Schilleci this game
compared to the last. He still scored 15 points but it's five points
below his average and in such a low scoring, defensive game, every
point matters. From here on, we lose and we're out, four straight
wins though and we are state champions.
1/31/06 Denton
Liberty Christian* (Away)
- My team choked pretty bad this game, we lost 66-48. This is FWC's
first district loss in over two years. We beat Liberty Christian two
weeks ago at home, all we had to do was win away and we'd be district
champions and undefeated in district. Instead, we came out at half-speed
and Liberty jumped all over us. Now we are co-district champions with
Liberty. I could not shut down Liberty's leading scorer, senior Michael
Schilleci. Two weeks ago in our win, I held him to 6 points, which
all came at the free-throw line. This game he scored 20 points, right
at his season average per game. I managed 9 points, 8 rebounds, 2
assists, a steal and a block this game.
1/27/06 Midland
Christian* (Home)
- This was our final home game of he season and senior night. Coach
Thannum started all seniors and made sure every senior got to play.
Our seniors took care of business too, winning 81-40. Ten of the seniors
scored. I scored 9 points, with 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
I also finished the sweetest alley-oop I every got in traffic in a
half court set. Thank you Eric Tisby, I will miss your passes next
year.
1/24/06 Arlington
Grace Prep* (Away)
- I had a good two-man game going with my point guard that help me
put up some stats but we still need to pass more. If we played unselfishly
every game and ran our offense, we could have six players averaging
in double digits. We won 65-55. I
scored 19 points, with 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals and a block.
1/20/06 Midland
Christian* (Away)
- This was a pretty easy game for me. The seniors were hitting and
we jumped on Midland Christian from the tip-off. FWC won 71-50. I
started and scored 8 points but didn't play my normal minutes and
the team didn't need my scoring this game. It would have been a much
closer game though without my defense. Once my teammates started scoring,
I found myself always having to cover 2-3 players on defense.
1/17/06 Denton
Liberty Christian* (Home)
- Fort Worth Christian won 65-57. We should have won by at least 25
points but instead played a stupid fourth quarter. I started and scored
10 points on 4-6 shooting from the field with 7 rebounds, 2 assists
and a steal. I had 8 of my points by the half but only got one field
goal attempt in the second half, having played nearly every second
of it. I am happy though, I held Liberty
Christian's leading scorer, senoir forward Michael Schilleci, who
was averaging 21 points a game to only 6 points, all of which
came from the line. My team needs to string together some good team
wins where we are playing smart and blowing teams out. I want to go
into the state tournament strong and I want to win.
1/13/06 Dallas
First Baptist (Away)
- Dallas First Baptist was a little overmatched from the start of
this game. FWC won 68-49. My team did play good team basketball this
game for the first time in a month. I started as a swing man but spent
most all the game guarding their center and on the blocks. My longest
shot all game was at the free-thow line, everything else was at the
rim. I scored 20 points, with 7
rebounds, an assist, 2 steals and a block. I'm happy about how
I shot, 7-8 from the field and 6-6 from the line.
1/10/06 Arlington
Grace Prep* (Home)
- Another frustrating game, but at least it's a win. It
took us until the fourth quarter to finally pull away from Grace Prep.
No one passes the ball and when they do it's always a second or two
late. I don't know how anyone ever gets an assist on this team. I
only had one field goal attempt going into the fourth quarter, and
I had played nearly all of the game. I started and had another average
game, scoring 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 steals. I don't
know what I was thinking, but I got called for three travels this
game and I think I could have been called for a couple more.
1/6/06 Dallas
Christian (Away)
- I started and had an average game, 14 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists,
3 steals and a block. We are still playing bad basketball, this game
should have been a blowout. Fort Worth Christian won 72-62, but it
was only a five point game with three minutes left.
1/3/06 Cleburne
(Away)
- We won this game 61-56. It was an ugly win,
we are still playing bad team basketball. I started at center and
jumped to start the game but I soon had to switch to Cleburne's senior
point guard and leading scorer Jacob Kelsey. Jacob killed us last
year in the fourth quarter when they beat us. He almost did it again
this year, burning me for 19 points. I only scored 5 points. No shame
though, Jacob Kelsey is former Team Texas player and teammate of mine
and is an awesome player. I'm not the first player, and definitely
won't be the last, to get "Jaked."
12/29/05 Brock
(Whataburger
Tournament)
- This game was the 2005 Whataburger Tournament Blue Division Championship
game. Brock avenged their homecoming loss to us two weeks ago by beating
us in the tournament finals 51-50. I think my team should have won this
tournament easily. We played bad team basketball all tournament but
that's what happens when players, and their parents, get more focused
on individual stats than winning in the sad hope that they might make
the "all-tournament team." Ooooh. I would have rather not
gone home a loser. And my coach was just overjoyed in the lockerroom
after the game because no Fort Worth Christian team had ever gotten
this far at a major tournament. I am not happy. I started and played
all but 40 seconds of this game. Again,
I had to cover Brock's leading scorer Riley Deaver, the 2005 Whataburger
Tournament Blue Division MVP, man-to-man all game. I scored 8 points
and I held Riley to 8 points, he had scored 18, 21 and 33 in the previous
tournament games. He is a great player and Brock is great team but
my team should have won this tournament.
12/28/05 Lipan
(Whataburger
Tournament)
- I started at center and played nearly every second of this game
against a team whose starting center, and tallest player, was only
six feet tall. I only got the ball inside the paint twice, all game
and managed to score 6 points. I guess I am supposed to be happy about
winning just 64-58 against a high school with a hundred total students,
and that has already beaten us this season, but I'm not. Instead,
I'm left wondering why my 6'8" center didn't start, why I only
got six shots all game for the second game in a row, why we shot jump
shots all game when we should have been driving and posting up, why
my teammates play so selfishly and ignorantly, and why I am on this
team.
12/28/05 Argyle
(Whataburger
Tournament)
- I started at power foward against Argyle's leading scorer and held
him well below the 19 points he had scored in the previous tournament
game. We won 62-52, I scored 4 points. I guess it's a good thing the
senoirs decided to make all their 3 pointers since they forgot how
to pass the ball. Just kidding, unless you saw the game.
12/27/05 Clarksville
(Whataburger
Tournament) -
I started at the small forward position and scored 10 points in our
60-50 first round win. Clarksville is the Blue Division Whataburger
Tournament defending champion and is the top ranked 2A UIL school
in the state. This was a good win for us and a nice way to start the
tournament.
12/19/05 Southwest Christian
(Home)
- For the third time this year we ran into Fort Worth Southwest Christian,
and for the third time we beat them. 77-60 this time. Our offense was
clicking at home and we had no problems putting up points. Fouls were
the only thing keeping them even in the game. I started and had a good
night, scoring 19 points, with 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. I
could have had a great night but I spent a quarter and a half on the
bench with foul problems.
12/16/05 Brock
(Away)
- This was a very tough game. Brock is Texas town that doesn't play
football, and they love their basketball. I started and was the second
leading scorer on my team with 11 points in our 52-50 win. I
stole an inbound pass, got fouled and dropped two free throws with 7
seconds left to seal the win.
12/10/05 Kountze
(Academy
Sports & Outdoors - Bagg Insurance Invitational) - I
started but our starting center had to take his SAT this day so I had
to play the entire game down low. We lost 71-68. This was an embarrassing
loss. We lead the entire game, until the last 25 seconds. We went into
the fourth quarter with a 10 point lead. I fouled out with 2 minutes
left, we had two turnovers in the last 1:30, and that's the game. I
did score 10 points, with 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals.
12/9/05 Keller
Central (Academy
Sports & Outdoors - Bagg Insurance Invitational) -
Coach started the seniors this game, I got to play the last three
quarters. We avenged a preseason loss to Keller Central by winning
52-35. I am happy about the win but I not very happy about only taking
five shots for the game, scoring just 7 points, with 2 rebounds, 1
assist and 1 steal.
12/8/05 Tatum
(Academy
Sports & Outdoors - Bagg Insurance Invitational) - Tatum
was a little short-handed and overmatched from the start but still played
very hard. I started at power forward. We lead from beginning to end
in a 70-38 win. I had to sit for a quarter and a half because of foul
trouble but still managed to score 12 points, with 5 rebounds, 4 assists
and 3 steals.
12/6/05 Lake Worth (Home)
- I started but didn't have a very good game. We won 50-40, thanks mostly
to playing at home because our defense was awlful. We had five players
score in double digits. I chipped in with 10 points, 6 rebounds and
a block. My Dad and I were in a car accident that totaled my Dad's car
an hour before my game and my neck and back are cramping up real bad.
Definitely not my best performance but it was all I could do to just
concentrate and stay in the game.
12/3/05 Dallas Madison (Spring
Creek Barbecue Arlington Classic) - I started and had my best game
of the season. My team broke out of our losing streak with a 69-52 win.
I played all but three minutes of the game, switching between the forward
positions, and scored 21 points.
12/2/05 Mansfield
Summit (Spring
Creek Barbecue Arlington Classic) - We ran into Team Texas starter
Preston Davis, and former Team Texas, current Dallas Mustang, Evan
Randall. This was an embarrassing loss. Our fourth in a row and Summit
scored twice as much as us. Coach started the senoirs. I came off
the bench at the center and power foward positions. I still contributed
and was the second leading scorer on my team with only 9 points.
12/1/05 Lubbock Estacado (Spring
Creek Barbecue Arlington Classic) - My team struggled offensively.
We lost our third game in a row. I started but only scored 6 points
in a 60-52 loss.
11/29/05 Lipan
(Away)
- We played like garbage against a team that we should have dominated.
We lost 46-45. I started and was the leading scorer with just 11 points,
enough said.
11/27/05 Fort Worth Nolan
Catholic (Trinity
Valley Classic) - My team played Nolan Catholic in the finals of
this year's Trinity Valley Classic. Unfortunately, we played poorly
and looked tired, while they hit nearly every three pointer they shot.
We suffered our worst defeat of the season so far. I started and scored
13 points in the loss. I am happy, though, about being named to the
2005 Trinity Valley Classic All-Tournament Team.
11/27/05 Fort
Worth Southwest Christian (Trinity
Valley Classic) - I started this game at center, and won the jump-ball.
I needed to control Southwest Christian's 6'4", all-tournament
center, Chris Sturtavent, for my team to win. I held him below his
average but really contributed more on the offensive end. I was the
leading scorer on my team with 17 points and we won 66-49.
11/26/05 Houston Gulf Coast Academy(Trinity
Valley Classic) - The senoirs started this game and by the time
I came into the game, it was already a rout. All 12 active players on
my team scored, in our 104-57 victory. I chipped in with 10 points.
11/19/05 Grapevine (Home)
- This was a huge game for me. Grapevine is the public school I would
be attending if I were not at Fort Worth Christian. So just my luck
I collided knees with one of our centers during warm-ups. I still started
the game, but my legs were never under me the entire game and unfortunately
I had to play heavy minutes too. I only scored 8 points but luckily
my team still pulled out a 64-58 win. I also chipped in with 4 rebounds,
3 assists and 1 steal.
11/18/05 Arlington Oakridge (Home)
- My team came back nicely following our loss last game. We beat Arlington
Oakridge 65-50. I started again, and was given the opportunity to cover
Quinton Moss, who was at the time their leading scorer. I'm happy to
be back to my normal self defensively, I was able to hold Quinton to
zero points for the game. I only scored 9 points myself, with 4 rebounds,
but I'm just happy that we were able to start a new winning streak.
11/15/05 North Crowley (Home)
- Big props to Kelvin Lewis at North Crowley, good luck next year at
Auburn. No one has ever shot that well against me. I started this game
and tried to cover Kelvin man-to-man all game but obviously I didn't
do a very good job since we lost 79-58. I am very proud of the fact
that Kelvin also covered me all game man-to-man, and I managed 9 points,
4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
11/12/05 Carrollton
Christian (Away)
- Coach started our five seniors and they were awesome in our 59-47
win. My offensive still isn't on track but our starters this game had
it handled and I think I still put in a strong game. I shot 1-4 for
2 points, I had 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. A really fun game,
I came in as swing man, then moved to center and then a little point.
11/8/05 Tyler Grace Community
(Home)
- This was my first start on varsity for FWC. I may have started the
game a little too excited, I stupidly picked up three fouls in the first
quarter but finished strong playing the entire third quarter in what
ended up being a FWC 79-52 Tyler rout. I ended with 6 points, shooting
3-5, with 4 rebounds and 4 steals.
11/5/05 Fort
Worth Southwest Christian Scrimmage (Away)
- I had to take my SAT test this morning so I did not get to the scrimmage
until the start of the second quarter. I should have just skipped the
scrimmage anyway, I did not play very well. The testing and rushing
to get to the scrimmage from an hour away took more out of me than I
imagined it could. I had 2 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds and 4 steals.
11/1/05 Intra Squad
Scrimmage (Home)
- Two hours of basketball against my toughest competition, my teammates.
Coach Thannum really mixed up the squads so the basketball got a little
ragged at times but for the most part we looked like we are going to
be a tough team to beat this year. FWC will be making a hard run at
winning state this year.
10/15/05-10/16/05
Fossil
Ridge Pre-season Shootout (Fossil
Ridge High School) - Off to a great start this season.
FWC played four games, all against 5A UIL schools(large public schools).
I started every game. I had to play the power forward position because
my team was short handed for the tournament. FWC defeated Fossil Ridge,
Keller & McKinney. Our loss was to Keller Central.
