Technical Specifications. This program runs on DOS, WINDOWS (all versions) and some variants of it run also on LINUX (DOS mode), UNIX (DOS mode). The memory space required for the program is 1.4 MB.
Important: The input text must be in ASCII format.

Linguistic Background and Performance.

Syntcheck uses the output results of Syntparse for most of its decisions. The difference between a spell-checker based on orthography and Syntcheck is that Syntcheck displays for correction those words that are spelt correctly from orthographical point of view, but incorrectly from grammatical point of view, which a spell-checker based solely on orthography cannot do.

Examples of the performance of SYNTCHECK:

i) Input sentence: John eat two apple for brekfast.
Output: John eat two apple for brekfast.
Incorrect form of: eat
Incorrect Number of: apple
Incorrect spelling of: brekfast
ii) Input: Susan have arrived safely.
Output: Susan have arrived safely.
Incorrect form of: have
iii) Input: The houses is built to withstand an earthquakes.
Output: The houses is built to withstand an earthquakes.

Syntcheck does provide some alternatives for correction, however in (i) it is up to the user to decide whether to use the Present Simple or the Past Perfect form of the verb "eat", or whether to use "one apple" instead of "two apples". Syntcheck also displays for correction those words that are spelt incorrectly from orthographical point of view (For example: brekfast). For efficient grammatical spell-checking, Syntcheck needs a whole sentence. The individual words and phrases can be spell-checked for orthographical errors only. For example:
iv) Input word: fall
Output: ......
v) Input word: correkt
Output: Wrong spelling of: correkt
vi) He is involved with this affair.
THIS WORD is used with the following preposition: "involved in".
CHECK if the Preposition "with" can be used after "involved".

Applications and Market.

Syntcheck was developed as a Computer Assisted Language Learning tool that can be used also as a grammar spell-checker by all those who write texts on a computer. The office clerks, the students, the writers, the editors, the proof readers, the translators and the typists will find it extremely useful for spell-checking of their texts. All language students may use it to locate the grammatical errors they make when they write and by
doing so, they can improve their knowledge of grammar and spelling. Syntcheck is designed to practice spelling at home, by composing one's own sentences or texts and checking them for grammatical and orthographical errors. Those teachers, who have a Personal Computer for each student in the classroom, can ease their work when they dictate texts to their students for spelling exercise, if they use Syntcheck to proof-read the texts as soon as they are written. Syntcheck cannot correct one's style of writing, or pin-point errors based on meaning.

About some of the menu items: "File" provides several different options to operate with files, one of which "File/Open" allows the user to operate in "batch" mode, i.e. to open a text file and process it (parse it, or spell-check it, or translate it, depending on the program). Menu item(s) "Spell", "Parse", etc. (depending on the software program) allow the user to either work in interactive mode (to type in a sentence and parse it, respectively - spell-check or translate it), or to parse (spell-check, translate) a whole text file.
