Harold Carter--Orvil Carter...William Francis Carter...
Francis Marion Carter (born Oct. 24, 1831 in Rosewood, Indiana; died April 30, 1918 in Nebraska) and
Ellen Strong (Born 1834?: Died June 4, 1917)

Francis Marion was born in Rosewood, Indiana to William D. Carter and Eleanor Lemmon when his father was 35 and his mother 31. He was the sixth of eleven children. Siblings included Sarah (1821-1861), Millison (1823-?), Isaac (1824-1899), Rachel (1827-188874?), Isabel (1830-1875?), David (1834-?), William (1836-?), Martha (1838-?), Ellen (1841-?) and Mariam (1849-?).

Ellen Strong, daughter of Captain Tommy Strong and Margaret Coons, was born in Floyd County, Indiana, and had at least one other sibling, a sister named Sarah.

Francis and Ellen married on January 26, 1856 in Harrison County, Indiana when Frank was 25. They had 13 children, all born in Harrison Indiana, 5 of whom died in infancy. William Francis was the fourth child. Surviving children were: Margaret Ellen (born 1856--died 1949 in Wheeler, Nebraska), Laura Bell (born 1857--died 1935), Charles Thomas (born 1859--died 1926 in Howard, Nebraska); William Francis (born 1861--died 1934 in Coffeyville, Kansas); George B.McClelland (born 1863--died 1948), Sarah Frances (born 1864--died 1948), Ambrose Geohegan (Miles)(born 1869--died 1944 in Buffalo, Nebraska), and Harvey Marion (1871--death date unknown, perhaps in Modesto, California).

Francis and Ellen also raised a girl, known only by her married name, Mrs. J.P. Schofield, whose parents had died when she was only five months old. At some point Ellen’s widowed sister, Sarah, and her six children also came to live with them in the 2½ story house.

Francis and Ellen operated a store on the Ohio River bank and probably handled business with river boats. After they married, Frank ran his father-in-law’s 480 acre farm and built a house and out-buildings after being promised half of the farm. The courts became involved in settling the estate after Strong’s death, however, and the land was lost. They left Indiana in 1883, when Francis was 53, to homestead near Garden City, Kansas. That didn’t seem to work out too well, so they left there in 1886, loading everything into a covered wagon (including the family Bible and two goblets to daughter Sarah from her grandfather Tommy Strong) and moving to Howard County, Nebraska. They bought a farm outside of Dannebrog near their daughter, Laura Ebert, and her family.

They lived near Dannebrog until 1916 when they sold their farm due to Ellen’s declining health (diabetes) and went to live with their daughter, Laura. Among the possessions they brought was a Maxwell automobile. After Ellen died the next year, Francis went to live with his son Miles in Ericson, Nebraska. He died from a stroke the next year, with Mrs. Schofield of St. Paul listed as caring for him in the last week of his illness.

Francis was described in his later years by his grandsons as being somewhat short and slightly built. They said he was mild-mannered and kindly, and his children and grandchildren were very fond of him. Ellen was described by her grandsons as being red-headed, hot-tempered, downright and forceful. She called a spade a spade, using the language of the frontier in which she had grown up. Like many of the early pioneer women, she smoked clay and corncob pipes. They also noted that she appeared to order Frank around quite a bit. She joined the Methodist church when she was 40.

Harold Carter--Orvil Carter--Ida Jane Rice...
David Shepherd Rice (born either June 12, 1820, location unknown or November 2, 1828 in Scott County, Indiana; died August 18, 1877 in Jackson County, Kansas) and
Amelia Vance Pennington (born August 11, 1826 in Trimble County, Kentucky; died March 7, 1917 in Shawnee County, Kansas)

We aren't sure about David Shepherd's parents, although there is some speculation that he was a son of Calvin Rice, in which his ancestory can be traced back to sixteenth century England. Amelia, however, was the daughter of William Vick Pennington and Mary Ann Henry. She was born in 1820 when her father was 36 and her mother 32. (Info regarding her many siblings to be added at a later date.)

David and Amelia were married in 1847 in Trimble Co, Kentucky. They had moved to a farm north of Topeka, Kansas by 1868. They both died in Kansas, he in 1877, probably at the age of 50, and she much later in 1917 at the age of 90.

Harold Carter--Mabel Riggs--David Luther Riggs...
Richard David Riggs (Born April 12, 1823 in Sullivan, Indiana; Died December 27, 1897 in Coffeyville, Kansas) and
Martha Jane Harris
(Born Oct. 2, 1828 in Sullivan Indiana; Died August, 1918 in Coffeyville, Kansas)

We don't know much about Richard and Martha's early years, other than that they were both born in Indiana. They married on February 8, 1844 when he was almost 20 and she was 18. They had 7 children, David Luther being the fifth, all born in Sullivan, Indiana. Children were: John (born about 1845; died?); Francis Marion (born 1846; died 1918 in Vigo, Indiana); Jim (born about 1847; died?); Charles (born about 1849; died? buried in Coffeyville, KS); David Luther (born 1853; Died 1929 in Coffeyville, KS); Arthur (born about 1855; died 1920); and Samuel Reed (born 1855; died 1910 in Nowata, Oklahoma).

Richard and Martha came to Kansas in 1870 when they were in the 40's and took a land grant of 160 acreas on a farm several miles north of Coffeyville where they lived the rest of their lives. He died at age 74, she at 89, and both are buried there in Elmwood Cemetery.

Harold Carter--Mabel Carter--Lucinda Ellen Coons...
John Walton Coons (Born 1809 in Clark, Illinois; Died July 26, 1878 in Coffeyville, Kansas) and
Elizabeth Giltner (Born August 16, 1815 in Clark, Illinois; Died August 15, 1897 in Coffeyville, Kansas)

John Walton Coons was born in 1858 in Indiana to John Coons and Anna Maria Batdorf when his father was 35 and his mother was 33. He was the seventh of eleven children. We don't know much about Elizabeth's early years other than that she was also born in 1858, although in Illinois.

John and Anna married on February 19, 1835 in Clark, Illinois when she was 19 and he was 26. They had 11 children, at least one dying at birth, and Lucinda being the 9th. Children were: Abraham F. (born 1842, Edgar, Indiana; died 1920); Margaret (born 1838, Edgar, Indiana; died 1844); William (born 1840 in Edgar, Indiana; died?); Thomas Jefferson (born 1842 in Edgar, Indiana; died 1916 in Nowata, Oklahoma); Mary Catheryn (born 1845, IL; died 1910); Almaretta (born 1848 in Clark, Illinois; died?); John Walton (born 1850 in Clark, ILlinois; died 1900);Elizabeth (born 1853 in Clark, Illinois; died?); Lucinda Ellen (born 1855 in Clark, Illinois; died 1937 in Coffeyville, Kansas); and Marion (born 1858 in Clark Illinois; died 1950.

Sometime after their last child was born in 1858, John and Anna moved to Coffeyville, Kansas, perhaps to live near Lucinda. They both died there, he at age 69, she much later at 84.
