Not only has communications been forever changed by technology, but the business world has also been changed greatly due a lot to the communications change. As technology has developed over the years, the average business person is no long "chained" to the desk as they once were in the past. This is due to a few technological advances such as the laptop, the cell phone and inevitibally a combination of the two with the extreamly popular blackberry and other various smartphones.
As technology advanced over the years, microprocessors and cpu's began to get much smaller and cheaper over the years. This lead to smaller desktop computers and eventually the laptop. As the laptop was introduced to the world, it was seen as a portable computer just as powerful as a regular desktop, and that it was. The first laptops were still a bit on the big side, heavy and much more expensive then a desktop computer. But once again as the years went by, technology advanced and laptops began to become smaller, lighter and faster. Sometimes faster then some of today's desktops. The laptop has now allowed business workers the freedom of being able to work away from the desk. On the airplane as they fly to a business meeting, a worker can polish up a presentation, to just being able to check up on e-mail in the hotel during an business trip. As well with the internet, laptops have integrated wi-fi which a user can connecte to a wireless network and be connected immidiatly to the world wide web. Today there are even
EDGE network provided by carriers such as Cingular that have helped develop and implemented it to users in the United States where you can have broadband access to the internet as long as there is a cellular signal.
As well, with the laptop, the cellphone and most popular
blackberry have grown leaps and bounds in the business world. Cell phones now allow people to stay in constant contact with fellow coworkers, bosses and clients. And from the cell phone came the blackberry from a company based in Waterloo called
RIM (Research In Motion). This company has forever changed the business world with a hand held devices that not only allows you to make calls, but also stay connected to the office with writing and recieving e-mail, mobile internet and pda (personal data assistant).
