Of the five existing rhino species, the two African Species can be found in the Australasian Region. Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo are involved in an intensive Captive Breeding Program for the Black Rhino. The White Rhino is the other species found in the region. Both species are difficult to breed and discovering the exact requirements needed can be trying. For many years the White Rhino were kept in pairs, but this is not the ideal. Both male and females need the stimulis and competition that comes from being in groups, several members of each gender.

In 1999 twelve White Rhino arrived from South Africa. They were delivered to four zoos around the region to help boost the chances of breeding the species. Prior to this those zoos who had White Rhino, had only individuals or pairs.

Another seven animals were imported into the region in September 2002. The four female and three males will spend a quarantine period at Monarto before five of them are sent to Western Plains. The other two will remain at Monarto.

At the moment I am unsure just how many rhino are in the region. Orana Park details are a bit odd.
