NEWS
FEBRUARY
- Orana Park is delighted at the arrival of a young male cheetah. The park
has has an excellent record of breeding this species until their breeding pair died.
Now their remaining cheetahs are all siblings so new blood has been desperately needed.
The new cheetah is Umballa and will gradually be introduced to the resident
female cheetahs. Hopefully soon there will be cubs born at the park.
- Farrah, a 12 year old female Sable Antelope suprised staff at Orana Park
when she gave birth to a healthy calf on January 26th. 12 is quite old for the antelope
and so it was thought that she was putting on wait. The parks herd of Sable Antelope
do not reproduce as well as expected, with only one or two births each year. It is the
only zoo in New Zealand to hold the rare antelope.
- The first Meerkats have been born at Werribee. The two pups have just emerged from
their underground den.
