Victorias State Government has announced a funding boost for the three Victorin
zoos. Melbourne Zoo will receive $15.5 million, which will be used for a
Water Recycling and Discovery Project, Stage 2 of the Trail of the Elephants Exhibit and
a new Orang-utan Exhibit.
Stage 2 of the Elephant Trail will include the acquisition of three female elephants
and seperate accomodation for the bull elephant. This will need about $5 million.
Healseville Sanctuary will receive $9.5 million for a
state of the art Wildlife Rescue Hospital, an Information Hub Center and enviromentally
friednly infrastructure. The hospital will provide visitors the opportunity
to go behid the scenes, where over 1500 injured or orphaned wild animals are cared for.
Werribee will receive $4 million for a Hippo River Exhibit and a Thematic Playground.
The Hippo River will accomodate Werribees hippos in a naturalistic river habitat that
will allow visitors dramatic encounters with the animals.
This funding joins $1.8 million provided by the State Givernment that will go towards
a Lion Safari Exhibit partially funded by Holden.
