Article I

Phi Alpha Theta

 

Article II

Our purpose is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, teaching, publication, and exchange of learning and ideas among historians.  Phi Alpha Theta seeks to bring students, teachers, and writers of history together both intellectually and socially; and it encourages and assists historical research and publication by its members in a variety of ways.

 

Article III

Undergraduates are eligible for Senior Membership of Phi Alpha Theta Honors’ Society after completing 12 hours of coursework in the history department (roughly 16 units) while maintaing a 3.0 GPA overall and a 3.1 GPA in the history major.   Exemptions may be made at the discretion of the faculty sponsor, Professor Thomas Barnes.  For Junior Membership, coursework in the history department is not required and there is no GPA minimum.  For both Junior and Senior membership, attendance at two activities sponsored by Phi Alpha Theta per semester is mandatory as well as an annual membership fee, to be determined at the discretion of the executive.

 

Only currently registered students, faculty and staff may hold Senior or Junior membership and be considered as active members.  Only active members may vote or hold office.  Non-active members of the organization will be allowed to participate in the social activities sponsored by Phi Alpha Theta but will not be permitted to hold leadership positions (Executive and Board tiers).  The executive consists of the President, Historian, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer.  The board consists of those active members who wish to help plot social and academic events for the club.

 

We will not haze according to California State Law; we will not restrict membership based upon race, color, national origin, religion, sex, physical and mental disability, mental condition (cancer-related or genetic characteristics), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship or status as a covered veterean (special disabled veteran, Vietnam-era veteran or any other veteran who served on active duty during a war or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized.

 

Article IV

Officers for 2000-2001 Academic School Year

Shirley Ye, President; Julie Pham, Historian; Daniel Kim, Vice President; Jeffrey Knox, Secretary-Treasurer

   

 

Duties of the Officers

President: Liason to the History Department, Supervisor of the Executive and Board Committees, Liason to the Office of Student Life and ASUC.

Historian: Editor of Clio’s Scroll, Secretarial Duties

Vice President: Assistant to the President, Liason to the Office of Student Life and ASUC.

Secretary-Treasurer: Assistant to the Historian, Secretarial Duties, Accounting and Finance.

 

The President, Historian, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer will constitute an executive body and quorum.  Officers will be nominated by peers and elected by majority vote in the Spring for the following academic year (August through May).  The positions of President and Historian require full senior membership.  It is encouraged that the Vice President and Secretary is a student of Sophomore or Junior standing, for the purpose of continuing the legacy of Phi Alpha Theta in the subsequent academic year.  The executive members should also have had experience in the previous academic year as active board members in helping organize and plot social activities.  Should an officer be assasinated, incapacitated, or graduated, the officer next in line will take over her/his office and duties.

The executive body will also function as signatories for the club through the ASUC.

 

Article V

General meetings are to be held at least twice a semester, with the first meeting to be held within 20 days of the first day of instruction in the academic semester.  The President will have the power to call meetings.  Either the President or Vice President may call for special emergency meetings. 

Executive meetings are to be held at the discretion of the President, as often as needed.  The purpose of the executive meetings will be to plan and facilitate the general club activity.

 

Article VI

Amendments may be made to this Constitution with a majority vote of the quorum.  A week must pass between the proposal and the final vote of the amendment.  All amendments, additions or deletions must be filed with the Office of Student Life, 102 Sproul Hall.

 

Article VII

In the case of a lack of members or interest in continuing Phi Alpha Theta, the files and records of the Society will be transferred to the Undergraduate Adviser for the History Department.  The files will be made available to future history undergraduates who want to reactivate the Phi Alpha Theta.  Any funds remaining from Phi Alpha Theta will be donated to the to History undergraduate education fund.
