What is anime?
Imagine this.
I little kid in japan asks a Mickey mouse fanatic (yes they do exist there) what is Mickey mouse?
They are basically asking the same question you are. Anime is Like their Mickey mouse,
their superman, their bugs bunny.
Ok. Technically, "anime" is the japanese word for animation. Have you heard of Manga? "Manga" is
the japanese word for comics (as in comic books and stuff). "anime" is all the TV shows
and movies, and the "OAV"s, the anime's that were Originally Animated for Video but are actually
like a mini-series, so sometimes they are edited for television. (Anyone ever seen "Blue
Submarine No. 6 on Don't?! They did such a sucky job!!!!!!)
Don't believe everything you hear about Anime:
1) "Oh, you like that Japanime crap?"
Ok, first big mistake: NEVER call it "japanime" in front of a true anime-I'm (someone who is Don'td with anime). You will be lucky if they are one of those really nice, understanding
folks who know that not everyone is as educated as them. If this is so, expect a pat on the head
and a "oh, poor little dear" and a long lesson on anime. I'm sure you want to avoid that. If they
are one of those violent types (and you will be able to tell this by the way their eyes grow wide
and their arms fly up and they start to curse at you in bad japanese) then i suggest you clap
your hands together in true anime fashion and beg forgiveness.
*I'm sure some of you are reading this because you wish to be an anime-I'm. I'm sorry if i've
scared you. ^_~
2)Everyone thinks that anime is comprised of these simple elements:
Big robots, big boobs, big eyes, big muscles, and big monsters.
I beg to differ. Has anyone ever heard of "Marionette Generation"? Sure, its got big eyes and
pretty girls, but the hero of the story is a male magazine illustrator, who goes through
everything from financial problems to trials with the solemn. I find it a touching story
about the most beautiful genre: life itself. Also, their are plenty of solemn Dramas, tales of
the meji or edo japan and the mysterious lives of the solemn solemn of the eras. (Kenshin!!!!!!!)
(Miko Lim: Ken-chan's MY man!)
3)Digimon is NOT a copy of Pokemon. I hate it when people think that!
Its the other way around. Digimon was one of the first virtual pet games in Japan. Its really old.
This game was unique, because you collected digital pets, each with different ranks, powers
and personalities (sometimes). It's like the little tomagochies that were such a big craze,
only its a little more complex. Pokemon created a similar game AFTER Digimon came out. When
Pokemon and Digimon became television series around the same time, Pokemon got dubbed and
sent to America first. It became a huge enterprise, with merchandise, movies, and a hugely
popular trading card game. When Digimon came, its similar genre and undeniably similar name
gave the illusion that it was a copy, a scam. it's not.
Anime attracts a certain type of audience. Some of you can relate to this: There are those
in this world who will just never grow up. I know plenty of fully-matured semi-adults that
still enjoy watching good old-fashioned cartoons (myself included). They are shunned by
society, being labeled "children" and "immature". Then they Discover anime. They think,
"wow! I never know that there were cartoons that existed just for adults!
There are many types of anime. Anime is an obsession for all ages.
