John J and Myra A Pyeatt Devine

Myra Almira Pyeatt was born about January of 1858 in Arlington, Missouri to Elisha and Frances Bohle Pyatt and died September 14, 1932, at the Sanitorium in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. She married c1878 John Joseph Devine probably in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, who was a carpenter for the Frisco Railroad. John was born on December 17, 1855 (or Dec 1851) in Philadelphia, Pennslynvania to Patrick and Anna Devine of Pennsylvania. He died October 20, 1918 at 1301 S Boyle Avenue in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri of pneumonia brought on by Influenza. George Kriegshauser Funeral Home buried him in Calvary Cemetery.

The known children of John and Myra:

We know from the 1910 census that Myra was credited with having borne eight children. I have put the unknown children in the spaces where I felt they might have been born. Hopefully, finding headstones or death records for them will help us to determine their true information. Since they lived in St. Louis City, they should appear in the city death records. I did not have luck locating them in Calvary Cemetery inscriptions. Myra and John J were in plot 22, 243.

John and Myra first appeared as follows on the 1880 census at #2915 Gratiot, St Louis, St Louis County, Missouri:

They were enumerated at #2915/55/59 Gratiot Street vol 35 ed 134 sh 7; (Ancestry.com image 7/37). Also at this address was the Jacob Pyatt family as follows:

Jacob and Isabella were enumerated twice - both times at #2915/54/58 Gratiot Street, but, with different information given for ages, etc. Isabella Pyatt was Myra's sister. In their childhood, Isabella was about 8 years older than Myra (from census entries); therefore, I would say that the ages of 23 for Myra and 31 for Isabella are correct. It is interesting to note that Myra lied about her age on almost every future census. Also in St Louis was their brother, Eldridge Pyatt, with his wife, Lizzie and daughter, Belle. Isabella's brother-in-law, William Pyatt, and his wife, Kate, were also in St Louis.

John and family appear as follows on the 1900 census of St. Louis County, Missouri:

This family was enumerated at #1301 Boyle Aveneue (Ancestry.com image 23/32). The number of children and number living were a little strange. I thought that the number of children was 6, but, the number still living looked like 8 or 3. So, since the number of children living can't be more than the number born and the answer to the number of children living on the 1910 census was 8, I decided that enumerator had switched the answers. So, originally I had this as 8 children with 6 still living. Living at #1307 Boyle Avenue was the Jacob and Isabella Pyatt family. Also in St Louis were their brothers: Samuel Edward Pyatt, with his wife, Caroline, and three children; Eldridge Pyatt, with his wife, Lizzie, and four children; Thomas Pyatt, and his wife, Anna, and two children; and, Benjamin Franklin Pyatt.

By the 1910 census, they appear as follows:

This family was enumerated #1301 Boyle Avenue (Ancestry.com image 24/36). The numbers on this entry are very clear and show 8 children and 3 still living for Myra. Their household also included lodgers Mary and Lizzie Roberts and Julia and Albert East. Jacob and Isabella were still at #1307 Boyle Avenue. Their brother, Samuel Edward Pyatt, is not found (he later re-appears) however, his family is at #4117 1/2 Clayton Avenue. I note that in the past 10 years, the Devines have lost three more of their children. I know that Anna and Grace are still living. Did May marry or die? Who were their other three children who had survived to the 1900 census but who were not living with them?

Myra and John's dauther, Anna Pate, died in 1913. She was 31 and died at her parent's home at 1301 S Boyle. Her cause of death was 'paralyis of heart due to valular insufficiency' with a secondary cause of 'grief or broken heart'. I have never seen this given as a cause of death. I have to wonder what happened to cause her broken heart. She was not divorced or widowed and her only known child had not died. I would think if it was general in nature, a physician would have listed 'depression' not 'grief'. Myra's father was the informant.

John's death certificate appears as follows:

Myra appeared on the 1920 census of St Louis, St Louis County, Missouri:

This family was enumerated in district 188 #1301/252/384 Boyle Avenue. On the next census image it starts with #1303 Boyle with Robert and Maud Lanham and her son, Joseph Sill. Then come Frank Pyatt (roomer) at #1301 Boyle Avenue and Harry Pyatt and family at #1307 Boyle Avenue. Therefore, siblings Myra and Samuel Edward are living next door to their brother, Benjamin Franklin Pyatt, and their nephew, Harry. It looks like the marital status for Edward was Wd and was changed to D. His ex-wife, Caroline, has remarried to Franklin Jones. They and two of Samuel's children are living at #1955 Cherokee Street. It looks like Myra has only aged 27 years in the 40 years since the 1880 census. Shortly after this census, Benjamin F Pyatt, died and Myra was the informant. She gave their parents as "Elisha Pyatt born Missouri" and "Fanny Bohle born Virginia".

Myra's death certificate is indexed online as "Myre Devine". Information included on the certificate is sketchy due to her death in the sanitarium at 'about 75' years of age. He birthdate and parents are unknown. However, it does give her place of birth as Arlington, Missouri. Krieghauser Mortuary buried her at Calvary Cemetery - perhaps they would have further information.

These entries from the Missouri birth and death database relate to this family:
