Jacob and Isabella Pyeatt Pyeatt

Jacob Pyeatt was born April 7, 1846, in Missouri to John and Julia Hornsby Pyeatt and died November 23, 1927, in Missouri Pacific Hospital, St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri, of pneumonia brought on by a broken femur. He is buried in the New Pickers Cemetery (now Gateway Gardens) St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri. He had been in the hospital about one month, but, his usual residence was 311 Euclid Avenue in Webster Groves, Missouri.

He married his first cousin, Isabella Pyeatt, in 1870 in Franklin County, Missouri. Their marriage is indexed in 'Franklin County Marriages 1863-1881' as 'Mr. Jacob Pycott' and 'Miss Isabella Pycott'. Isabella was the daughter of Elisha and Francis Bohle Pyeatt. Isabella was born September 11, 1849, in Allenton, Missouri, and died March 13, 1928, in Webster Groves, Central Township, St. Louis County, Missouri of a paralytic stroke.

Jacob and Isabella had the following known children:

There were a total of 10 children born to Jacob and Isabella while only seven lived long enough to make a census enumeration and the names and year of birth of the other three are unknown to us. I have added Cora Belle who is found on the St Louis Death Register. She died at the #2915 Gratiot address of Jacob and Isabella. I do not know if further examination of the death register would reveal age, parents, etc. A child named John F Pyatt/Pyall died in St. Louis on October 7, 1875 at age 1 year and 14 days at 2911 Cooper Street. I am not sure that this is a child of Jacob and Isabella, but, it is a possibility given that the family had moved to St. Louis by 1873 as evidenced by city directory listing given below.

Jacob and family appeared as follows on the 1870 census of Boles Township, Franklin County, Missouri, as follow:

This family was enumerated 4th Aug 1870 household #352/345 pg 51 (left upper page number) pg 98 (right upper page number). Neighbors were Elisabeth Behr, Isaac Minor, Adolf Guslin, Isador Heulin and Alois Lugrain. In Washington Township were Elisha Pyatt and William Piat brothers of Jacob.

Jacob appears to have moved to St. Louis and appeared in the City Directory of St. Louis in 1873 and 1874. I believe that his brother, Frederick, appeared there as well as follows:

My next request to the Missouri State Archives for city directory listings will be for 1875 and 1876 to see if Jacob and Isabella lived at the 2911 Cooper Street address.

I find Jacob enumerated twice on the 1880 census of St Louis City, St Louis County, Missouri, as follows:

This family was enumerated vol 35 ed 134 sh 7. It was then enumerated again in ed 341 as follows: This enumeration was in vol 41 ed 341 sh 20: #2915 Gratiot Street, St Louis. Other Piatt families in St Louis include: Harry B Piatt; Michael H Piatt; Peter Puyot; Eldridge Pyeatt (Isabella's brother); and Jacob's ?brother, William Pyatt.

Jacob was listed in the St Louis City Directory of 1880 as follow:

On the 1890 St Louis City Directory he is as follows:

Living next door at 1309 Boyle was Samuel Edward Pyatt 'Edward Pyatt lab r. 1309 Boyle Ave' who was Isabella's brother. Elisha Pyeatt, Isabella's father, was listed as 'Pyatt, Elijah - r. 1307 Boyle Ave' he apparently died later that year as indicated below. Jacob apparently lived at this Boyle address many years as he was still there in 1900.

By the 1900 census Jacob's family had changed considerably and appeared in St Louis City, St Louis County, Missouri as follows:

The family lived at 1307 Boyle Avenue and was enumerated 100/556/12/14. They were indexed on Ancestry.com as 'Faner' which is the surname of the person directly above them (Ancestry.com image 23/32). At #331 S Garrison was their son, William, as follows:

William's family lived at 331 S Garrison in St Louis and was enumerated at 99/345/13/5. At #3114 Chanteau Avenue was Jacob's ?brother, William W Pyatt, and family.

According to notes of Jean Vail, Jacob is listed in the St Louis City Directory 1874, 1877, 1878, 1886 and 1893.

John M Pyeatt, Isabella's brother, died March 13, 1888, at #1309 Boyle Avenue of Erysiplaus Phlegmonous. He was aged 27 years, was a labor and was single. His attending physician was Dr. Thomas J Harvey and his undertaker was M Jouser. He was buried in a Pacific, Missouri, cemetery. That same address was home to her brother, Edward Pyatt, according to the 1890 city directory.

Elisha Pyeatt who died of Anasarca in St Louis, Missouri, on July 17, 1890, (certificate #4736) was aged 66 years and 6 months old and born in Missouri. He was a farmer, widowed, lived on #1307 Boyle Avenue and was buried in a Pacific, Missouri, cemetery. His attending physician was Dr Thomas J Harvey and the undertaker was George P Schmer and Son.

By the 1910 census the family appeared as follows - still at the Boyle street address:

This family was enumerated 29 Apr 1910 #242/242 at 1307 Boyle Avenue 12th Supr Dist Enum 387 Sheet 13A pg ?4909/4707. This Thomas appears to be Isabella's brother (who should be 47 years old) per other census entries and information on the family of Elisha and Francis Bohle/Boly Pyatt. I couldn't make out the relationship for Thomas. It appears much like 'son' except that there is a 'g' or something at the end of it. I could not come up with anything that made sense. The '37' was fairly clear but appears to be in error [it should be 47]. One of Thomas' daughters was living with her grandparents and the other with an aunt and uncle. Right before the #1307 address was a boarding house where among other families (Smith, Moore, Eastwood, etc.) lived Jacob and Isabella's daughter Emma as follows:

Then, at 1309 Boyle lived Jacob and Isabella's son, Albert Walter Pyatt, as follows:

Isabella claimed to have had 10 children with 6 still living. The ones known to still be living were Harry, Maude, Charles, Albert (Walter) and Emma. So, which other child was still living? Was Fannie married and still living? She would have been old enough to marry by the 1900 census. Or, was William dead by the 1910 census?

On the 1911 St Louis City Directory, the following family members (working males) all lived together at the Boyle Street address.

  • PYATT JACOB - insp r 1307 S Boyle Ave
  • PYATT HARRY - paint r 1307 S. Boyle Ave
  • PYATT, THOMAS - tobacco r. 1307 S Boyle Ave

    Next door was:

Surprisingly, both Jacob and Isabella were both still living on the 1920 census of St Louis, St Louis County, Missouri, as follows:

This family was enumerated #116/441/12/83 #9 4200 Manchester Avenue. It appears that they finally moved from the Boyle Street Address. Perhaps they moved closer to Walter's 1911 workplace. He was a grocery clerk at 4256 Manchester on the city directory while living next to his parents at 1309 Boyle. Walter and his wife did not have any children on the 1910 census after three years of marriage. Did she die trying to have a child as many women did in those days? Jacob and Isabella appear to be raising their daughter Emma's three children. Emma appears again in 1930 with a second husband. Was she hospitalized during this period or just living elsewhere?
