John and Elizabeth Cline Piatt

John Piatt was born April 16, 1767, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, to John and Jane Williamson Piatt and died March 10, 1823, in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Cline who was born in 1773 in Middlesex County, New Jersey, and died June 21, 1834, in Washington Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Both are buried in the Christ Lutheran (Stone Church) Cemetery located on the grounds of the Allenwood Federal Prison Camp (behind White Deer Golf Course) Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.

Children of John Piatt and Elizabeth Cline are:

In the "Union County PA: History: Annals of the Buffalo Valley by John Blair Lynn" (Pg 376)....."John Brady, the third, died several years ago. James, the youngest, died in Franklin county, in 1829. He was a man of fine intellect, and was thought to be the most talented of the family.

Of the daughters of Sheriff John Brady, Mary married William Piatt, uncle of Judge Piatt, of Brady township, Lycoming county; Hannah married Judge Piatt; Charlotte married H. C. Piatt; Jane married Roland Stoughton; her descendants, Mrs. Lyndall's children, still live in Lewisburg; Nancy married George B. Eckert, of Lewisburg."

On the 1800 census of Washington Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, I found the following:

By the 1810 census, the same family appears as follows in Washington Township, Lycoming County, Pennsyslvania:

This would appear to be John (male 26-45); with son Herman (male 0-10); sons William (male 10-16) and John (male 10-16); daughter Jane (female 0-10); daughters Elizabeth (female 10-16) and Mary (female 10-16); and wife Elizabeth (female 26-45). Who would the 16-26 year old male be?

Then, on the 1820 census of Washington Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania:

John's household seems to consist of John himself (1m45+); son, Herman (male 10-16); sons, John (male 16-26) and William (male 16-26); daughters, Jane (female 16-26) and Mary (female 16-26); and his wife, Elizabeth (female 45+). Who is the female 0-10 years old? Is it daughter Frances who died at one year of age? If so, she should be listed as the last child. However, it could be any female who lived with the family at the time of the census.

I find the widowed Elizabeth on the 1830 census in Washington Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, as follows:

  • Piatt, Elizabeth 1m20-30; 1f10-15; 1f15-20; 1f50-60; 4 total

They were enumerated on pg 208 (Ancestry.com image 1/20; sometime indexed as Elkland which is on same page). It appears to be Elizabeth (female 50-60); her son, Herman (male 20-30); and two unknown females. Her daughters were too old to be the females enumerated with her and were most likely already married at this time. Their neighbors were William Piatt, Peter Beber, Jacob Frock, William Piatt Jr, William Sedam, Jane Sedam, Robert Hamelton, John Shutt, Susannah Whitsett, Alexand B???rd, James Welleschultree, Amos Addes, George Darling, Robert Fordman, Gebiral Yount, John Nickel, Francis Hamelton, Moses Hood, Rachel Piatt, Cornelius Lamilson, Joseph Lamilson, James Russell, Margaret Oakey.

Living next door to Elizabeth was:

And, on the following page appears to be her son, William Piatt, who is the Rachel on that page?:

Also in Washington Township was her widowed daughter-in-law, Mary Foresman Piatt, and family:

They were enumerated pg 214 #427 line 147 (Ancesty.com image 13/20. Their neighbors included Robert Shulley, Jerrett Vanfleet, Elizabeth Carrachn, George Goodlander, James McKinney, * , Samuel Billman, Catherine Forseman, Benjamin Simonton, and John Forseman. So, looks like she was in the neighborhood of her Foresman relatives. I also note that Elizabeth's daughter, Mary, married a John Foresman and is probably the one living near Mary Foresman Piatt as follows:

I found two Isaac Allens' on the 1830 census of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. One was in Clinton Township - both the oldest male and female were 60-70 years old; and, one was in Jackson Township as follows:

  • Allen, Isaac 3m20-30; 2m30-40; 1f<5; 1f15-20; 1f20-30

They were enumerated pg 247 #86 (Ancestry.com image 7/8). This entry would seem to fit the the Jane Piatt Allen family.

I believe that the 'H C Piatt' on the 1840 census of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, is John and Elizabeth's son, Herman C Piatt. There aren't any young children in their household. Then, Herman died in 1842 which leaves me to wonder if there was time for them to have had children.

I stumbled across Elizabeth Piatt McCormick and family on the 1850cen.html"> 1850 census of Fairfield Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, as follows:

This family was enumerated 1770/1789 pg 498 (Ancestry.com image 5/32). I also find the George Foresman (born c1798 PA) family with Mary (born c1797 PA) in Washington Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Is this the daughter of John and Elizabeth? The children still living at home were Elizabeth (born c1826 PA), Robert (born c1830 PA), and George (born c1835 PA). This was the only Mary Foresman that appeared to be the right age to be Mary Piatt Foresman. There were many Foresmans in this area. There were no John Foresman who were born before 1825. Could Mary have been widowed and remarried by the 1850 census? Without a year of birth, it would be hard to search for a "Mary ?". In looking for possible other children of Mary Piatt Foresman, I found a coachmaker named John H Foresman (born c1823 PA) in Washington Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, with a wife, Sarah (born c1827 PA), and son, Joseph (born c1848 PA). Interestingly, he had a young man (also a coach maker) named James McCormick (born c1831 PA) and also George Henry (born c1832 PA coach maker). Is this one of Mary and John Foresman's children living with one of her sister, Elizabeth's, children? He lives next door to ?Jane Foresman (born c1791 PA) with children Mary (born c1826 PA), Elizabeth (born c1824 PA), Robert (born c1834 PA) and Catherine (born c1845 PA). Could this be Mary 'Jane' Piatt Foresman? Or, is she the Mary Foresman (wife of John) who died in 1831 at 28 years old per Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery inscriptions?
