Bird Base 1 1. First, start with your paper white side up with one corner facing you so it resembles a diamond shape.  Valley fold it down in half. 
Bird Base 2 2. Next, valley fold it in half to the left.
Bird Base 3 3. Lift up the top triangle and open it up.

Bird Base 4 4. Then squash it down to make a diamond.
Bird Base 5 5. Flip the model over and do the same to the other side.  You will now have a diamond shape with two layers
Bird Base 6 6. To make this next step easier, you may want to fold both the left and right points in to the center on both sides, and fold the top point down and unfold on both sides.  Then you will open up this diamond and squash it flat.

Bird Base 7 7. After this step your model should look like the example to the left.
Bird Base 8 8. Next you will flip the model over and repeat on the other side.  This is the bird base which is used as a starting point to make several different birds, as well as other other origami models.
