Rearranged: TRL Top 40 of 2000

From Phil K.:
Well, I actually watched the entire show today, all 4 hours and 40 videos. And I was surprised at what MTV pulled here. POD and Ricky were too low on the show, and KoRn was only shown once when they had 3 videos in the real top 40. When Carson got to the top 10, I noticed that there was room for one video that I hadn't predicted. Since 98*'s "Give Me Just One Night" wasn't shown yet, I thought it would be in the Top 10. Instead, it wasn't on the countdown at all, and Juvenile's "Back That Thing Up", which was on TRL all of January and went off and on in the first half of February as it barely made it to a 56-day retirement, was at #9. The video was never in the top 3 on any show, and they placed it ahead of Hanson's "If Only", which was #1 more than any other summer video. Could that make the travesty department?
Oh well, here's how I would rearrange the 40 videos according to my own tastes, with the rank on the show and the actual rank, as I figured it, in parentheses. My rankings may be a little different from yours because I counted the Spring Break show.
But first, the snubbed videos:
"Falling Away from Me" by KoRn (20)
"Give Me Just One Night" by 98* (23)
"Only God Knows Why" by Kid Rock (25)
"I Turn to You" by Christina Aguilera (26)
"Somebody Someone" by KoRn (28)
"Case of the Ex" by Mya (32)
"Gotta Tell You" by Samantha Mumba (38)
"Stellar" by Incubus (40)
And now, the videos that managed to make it on the special:
40 "Who Let the Dogs Out?" by Baha Men (36, T-53)
Who let the Baha Men out?
39 "This I Promise You" by *N Sync (31, 15)
I won't even start to list the flaws that this video has.
38 "If Only" by Hanson (10, 5)
They must have cheated to get to #1 that many times.
37 "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang (24, 35)
It's the sheer stupidity of the video that gets to you.
36 "Back That Thing Up" by Juvenile (9, 39)
Did Carson put it in the top 10 because he realized the video was retired early?
35 "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child (18, T-29)
Way too repetitive.
34 "Country Grammar" by Nelly (32, T-53)
How did this one get on again?
33 "American Bad @$$" by Kid Rock (19, T-29)
Recycled lyrics and listing the bands you like just don't work.
32 "The Way I Am" by Eminem (29, 17)
How long does he take to fall from the building?
31 "I Think I'm In Love with You" by Jessica Simpson (30, 41)
You just can't rip off the most famous guitar lick of the 80's.
30 "It's Gonna Be Me" by *N Sync (8, 3)
The only good thing about it is the dancing, and 2 *N Sync videos in the top 10 is 2 too many.
29 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin (15, 9)
Like the song, detest the video.
28 "Back Here" by BBMak (39, 50)
Their other video did better on TRL. This one is pointless, but the song is very catchy.
27 "Love Don't Cost a Thing" by Jennifer Lopez (37, 48)
Another video that shouldn't have made it on the special.
26 "Come On Over Baby" by Christina Aguilera (5, 10)
It still looks like a Gap commercial.
25 "Party Up" by DMX (38, T-56)
I knew they'd let it on the show somehow. But look at its actual rank.
24 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys (2, 6)
It's just not their best.
23 "Candy" by Mandy Moore (26, 36)
They put her this high because she decided to drop by and guest host. And she looked a lot better today than in this video.
22 "My Everything" by 98º (21, 34)
Again, their other video did better. But this time, they showed this one because it was newer.
21 "Forgot About Dre" by Dr. Dre & Eminem (14, 13)
This one was good when it first came out, but then it got old.
20 "Bye Bye Bye" by *N Sync (1, 1)
Splitting my rearranged countdown is the one video that Carson got right. The driving scene redeems it from suffering the same fate as the rest of *N Sync-dom on my list.
19 "What a Girl Wants" by Christina Aguilera (16, 18)
She can dance.
18 "Stronger" by Britney Spears (33, 22)
It's not her best, but it shows some attitude.
17 "Big Pimpin" by Jay-Z (23, 51)
Another Spring Break classic.
16 "The One" by Backstreet Boys (28, 2)
Great song, and even though the video is just spliced concert footage, it works.
15 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach (22, 24)
Although I liked "Broken Home" better, this one served as the breakthrough of a new artist and the return of the rock.
14 "Make Me Bad [remix]" by KoRn (7, 14)
I'm not a fan of theirs, but I'm glad that the one video of theirs that MTV chose was their best one of the year. The special effects put it high on my list.
13 "Adam's Song" by Blink-182 (17, 33)
And they can do the serious stuff too.
12 "Oops!...I Did It Again" by Britney Spears (3, 12)
She sure did!
11 "Rock the Party" by P.O.D. (34, 21)
They're still the only Christian band to hit #1 on TRL. And even though they were gypped today, I have to rank this good party video high.
10 "Stan" by Eminem & Dido (35, 42)
I finally got to see most of the video, and it was better than I thought it was. But they performed it better on the SNL season premiere.
09 "The Hardest Part of Breaking Up" by 2Ge+her (40, 37)
Who cares if they're not real? They're still funny.
08 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem (4, 8)
It's controversial, funny, and catchy all at the same time.
07 "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit (27, 31)
A good hard-rock video for the song that single-handedly started the riots at Woodstock '99.
06 "Lucky" by Britney Spears (13, 7)
I don't know if I can handle watching 2 Britneys at one time.
05 "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely" by Backstreet Boys (12, 4)
This proved that the BSB don't just do pretty little videos, like some other group I can think of.
04 "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" by Britney Spears (20, 16)
Why is it that my favorite video of hers this year almost didn't make it to retirement?
03 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo (6, 11)
Nothing says Spring Break like this video. And if it weren't for the travesty, it would've been retired on my birthday.
02 "Faded" by soulDecision (25, 27)
It's a great party video, and I finally found a song to replace this in my head. But it's "The Call."
01 "Rollin" by Limp Bizkit (11, 19)
You know what time it is! The cars, the rooftop, the dancing, the Rollin' girls, this video has it all.

From Chris:
First of all my commentary on the top 40:
Fully agreeing with Sarah, I think TRL made a lot of mistakes on this countdown. I like Blink 182 and KoRn, but their videos really didn't do that good on TRL so I don't know how they placed so high. And I think a lot of videos were stubbed including:
        1. 98°- Give Me Just One Night (should have been played ahead of My Everything)
        2. Mya- Case of the Ex (made the countdown around 30 times, more than DMX, Baha Men, and Jennifer Lopez...so why wasn't it on?)
        3. Samantha Mumba- Gotta tell You
        4. KoRn- Falling Away from Me and Somebody Someone
        5. Kid Rock- Only God Knows Why
        6. 2Ge+her- Calculus (U + me=us)
        7. Mandy Moore- I Wanna be with You
        8. Incubus- Stellar, Christina Aguilera- I Turn to You, Mya- Free, and Green Day- Minority, Dream- He Luvs U Not
Now for the Top 40 of 2000:
40 Ricky Martin- She Bangs
39 Hanson- If Only
38 98°- My Everything
37 Eminem- The Way I Am
36 Baha Men- Who Let the Dogs Out?
35 Britney Spears- From the Bottom of my Broken Heart
34 soulDecision- Faded
33 KoRn- Make Me Bad (Sickness in Salvation remix)
32 *N Sync- This I Promise You
31 Backstreet Boys- Show me the Meaning of Being Lonely (**premiered on New Year's Eve 1999)

22 Limp Bizkit- Rollin'
21 Eminem- The Real Slim Shady
20 Britney Spears- Stronger
19 Dr. Dre and Eminem- Forgot About Dre
18 Jennifer Lopez- My Love Don't Cost a Thing
17 *N Sync- Bye, Bye, Bye

14 Jay-Z- Big Pimpin'
13 Blink 182- Adam's Song
12 Papa Roach- Last Resort
11 Backstreet Boys- Shape of my Heart
10 *N Sync-Bye, Bye, Bye
09 Destiny's Child- Say My Name
08 Eminem f/Dido- Stan
07 Sisqo- The Thong Song
06 Juvenile- Back that Thang Up
05 DMX- Party Up
04 Jessica Simpson- I Think I'm In Love with You
03 Christina Aguilera- What a Girl Wants
02 Mandy Moore- Candy
01 Christina Aguilera- Come On Over Baby

01 Christina Aguilera "Come on Over Baby"

From Todd:
There are a lot of songs that weren't on this countdown that should have been (obviously), but I think that "Case of the Ex" by Mya and "I Turn To You" by Christina Aguilera both should have been included above all others.
Even though neither retired, they both did better than some videos included on the countdown. Heck, "Free" by Mya has done better than some the TRL people put on. And even though I think "Oops!..." should be at #3 (if not higher), statistically other videos have done better than it. But like Sarah said, I also agree that TRL favors diversity. But at least they are giving it an honest effort to include the full range of videos that have been on TRL at some point. Well here's my top 40 based on just my opinion (which you will probably see by top 10 consisting of mainly Britney and other pop videos hehe) and nothing statistical at all...
40 "American Bad Ass" by Kid Rock
Never liked it, not very hard to see why.
39 "Who Let The Dogs Out?" by Baha Men
Whyyyyyyyy?? What did we do to deserve this???
38 "Party Up" by DMX
37 "Country Grammar" by Nelly
Dude I am SOOOOO going to remodel my bedroom with HUB CAPS! *energetic thumbs up*
36 "Forgot About Dre" by Dr. Dre f/Eminem
35 "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang
34 "The Way I Am" by Eminem
The comic falling is what I never liked about this video.
33 "Rock The Party" by P.O.D.
32 "Big Pimpin" by Jay-Z
31 "She Bangs" by Ricky Martin
Boy I can't wait for his video with Christina...just IMAGINE what that is going to be like.
30 "Last Resort" by Papa Roach
29 "Make Me Bad" by Korn
28 "Back That Thing Up" by Juvenile
Did you know that the REAL words to this song are "Girl you look good when you back that ass (not sure if I'm allowed to say that on here) up"...it took me FOREVER to learn that. I guess I needed to get with the times.
27 "Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely" by Backstreet Boys
I actually started to like this song but the video - no.
26 "The Thong Song" by Sisqo
25 "The Real Slim Shady" by Eminem
24 "The One" by Backstreet Boys
This video really made me mad that all they did was put together video clips from concerts - seems very lazy of them to me.
23 "Back Here" by BBMak
22 "My Everything" by 98º
I, along with everyone else it seems lol, think that "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" definitely should have replaced this one. But I don't think the other song deserves to be as high as it was on the real countdown - yet alone THIS one.
21 "If Only" by Hanson
They were in...They went away...They came back with this song...They went away again...ohhhh the drama of what is to come next.
20 "Candy" by Mandy Moore
19 "Faded" by soulDecision
The facial expressions make the whole video.
18 "Shape of My Heart" by Backstreet Boys
It took me a while to get the whole "black and blue" theme...man I am slow sometimes.
17 "Hardest Part of Breaking Up" by 2Gether
Always so funny...never failed to make me laugh at least a little bit.
16 "This I Promise You" by ‘N Sync
It's all about the pants...oh and the *shutter* horrid hand movements.
15 "Adam's Song" by Blink-182
14 "Stan" by Eminem f/Dido
Awesome chorus by Dido.
13 "I Think I'm In Love With You" by Jessica Simpson
12 "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit
Awesome Limp video.
11 "What A Girl Wants" by Christina Aguilera
I think she was still learning how to dance in this video because she looks rather...ummmm what's the word....bad.
10 "Say My Name" by Destiny's Child
They really are awesome...their CD is better than I thought it would be and this song is awesome.
09 "Bye Bye Bye" by ‘N Sync
Although I don't really like the train part cause it's rather, well, stupid, I do really like this video.
08 "Come On Over Baby" by Christina Aguilera
With how mean I was to this video in my ideal countdowns you'd think I hate it but I really don't. That much. :-)
07 "It's Gonna Be Me" by ‘N Sync
I don't think I'll forget the Making the Video for this one...Chris really is a funny, funny guy.
06 "Break Stuff" by Limp Bizkit
This is the most awesome song to listen to, really loud, when you are pissed off. And the video was filmed in my town! Oh I'm cool, I know. 05 "Love Don't Cost A Thing" by Jennifer Lopez
I think her new album is really going to be good...and boy can this girl dance - very well demonstrated in the dance sequence of this video. And let Britney rule supreme...
04 "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart" by Britney Spears
The more I see this video the more I actually like it. It really shows how good Brit's voice really can be when she wants it to.
03 "Lucky" by Britney Spears
My favorite Brit song and an awesome video.
02 "Stronger" by Britney Spears
New video but an awesome one at that. I think Britney did an awesome job getting her point across of being "stronger" in this video. I never really did understand the point that she was trying to make about being stronger till it all comes together with the bridge...totally awesome!
01 "Oops!...I Did It Again" by Britney Spears
As corny as this sounds, she really did do it again. She proved with her second album that she wasn't just a one hit wonder and will be around for a long time to come. She is more than just a puppet or sex tease of her management - she can sing, dance, and has the all around personality to be here for a while. I know it must be odd to have all her videos as the top positions but I really do like them that much and feel that they deserve to be in the top spots. Ok that is all lol.

From Michael:

Back to TRL
