THE HANGED
MAN
Description
The Hanged
Man is hung upside down from a tree. His hands are behind his back
indicating that he is unable to free himself and his feet are bound to
the branches. He is wearing casual clothes which suggest that he
is a normal person and not a magical or mystical being that are common
in the Tarot and he has a halo around his head. His face is impassive
as he hangs upside down from the tree.
This image
suggests to me that although the Hanged Man is not tightly bound to the
tree, he is bound enough for it to be a problem for him if he were to try
to free himself. Instead of fighting the situation, he has remained
passive and as a result of his patience, he has gained spiritual knowledge,
indicated by the halo.
Divinatory
Meaning
This card
represents bondage. It means that the person will experience a period
of stagnation and will feel as though no matter what they try to do about
a situation they wind up not getting anywhere at all. This meaning
applies to matters of the heart and matters of business equally.
This card is not to be read in a negative fashion however as just as the
Hanged Man goes with the situation and learns from it, so too can the person
acheive inner balance through what can often be a frustrating time.
