Welcome to our family tree

Cousins Reunited 15th September 2007

Ronnie Davis, our cousin in Canada, thought it was a good idea to have a get together in England. Joan and her husband Michael thought it was an excellent idea and invited all of us to her house. They bought us all a mug with the date and 'Cousins Reunited' written on it for all of us to keep as a memento and fed us all day. We thank you very much for that!

We all had such a good time and decided to create a web site for those who couldn't attend and to share all of our photographs. This will take time to complete because our Grand parents had 13 children. Two died very young so for between 70 to around 90 years there were 11 brothers and sisters growing up together. They were all born to our Grand parents Levy and Hannah (nee Clark) Davis. The two children who died were Thomas and Esther, one died at six weeks and the other aged months.

I have created a link to separate pages for each of our parents and their families and these will eventually contain pictures and a history of the respective families.

It is far too complicated to create an up-to-date family tree in the form of a flow chart so I will try and create one for each of the Davis families on their web pages.

I also discovered at the Cousins reunion that Aunty Millie was born Amelia Davis. That could cause some problems in hundreds of years when someone searches for Millie Davis and only finds Amelia. Family trees are so important for future generations to save them from the problems we have today. I haven't even mentioned the future problem of step families - My own tree could get very complicated without adding anyone other than my children, step children and all their parents!

Any contributions to the Davis tree will be appreciated so I have added a link to my email for any important details and pictures that you might like to include on our web site.

Information needed for our trees include: Family member dates of birth, children and grandchildren; Anything exciting such as important achievements to brag about; Careers and professions. I also need the surnames of married females because they are the most difficult to find when searching family trees because they marry and change their surname. If you recognise yourself in any pictures please tell me who you are and what you can remember about the day and who else is in the picture. Most of all please tell me if I make spelling mistakes!

You probably know by now that I am on the Internet daily and I write something on a daily basis for fun as well as my work. So don't think I won't have time to scan pictures and up-date pages for you. I can even chat on the phone to you and up-date with the information while you tell me which bits to add or take out!

When everything is completed I can also put the whole website onto a DVD disc for each family to keep with a folder of the original full-quality pictures to print or view on your TV.

If we get it up-to-date and keep it that way as each new child is born we can leave important information for anyone (who might not be born yet) searching for the Davis ancestors in years to come!

This website is not advertised although a few might come across the pages eventually if they search google for specific names and/or quotes. (Try typing your own name into google with quote marks and see what happens! - such as "lynda archard" or "pictures of London") For this reason and for data protection there are things I won't include here such as your telephone numbers (mine is already all over the Internet), addresses and too personal information. I could add them to a DVD later, which will be Davis only information. Please let me know what you think is important for us to share with each other now while the site is 'live.'

Because the web site is growing daily I will give you a hint on where to look for new stuff and when it was changed.

Please email to say give me information, send your scanned photos, to tell me what I get wrong, what you think of the site or just to let me know you are related to me if I haven't met you. I don't bite and I will go out of my way to find the answers to your questions if I don't know them!

Please note my telephone number on the pdf version of the Davis History is wrong. The last two numbers should be 24 not 34! You can now download and print the new pdf file booklet. Download here (3.8 mb)

28th March 2011 ...and the Davis COMPLETE back to 1790 tree in PDF format!

12th June 2011

I have updated our booklet to include pictures of Esther and Isaac Davis. There is also a picture of Rosa Davis' gravestone. They were emailed to me by Helen Jones who is the Grandaughter of Elias Davis, our Grandads elder brother. There is a picture of Esther outside her shop, her sons Elias and David and an as yet unnamed woman who looks too much like our Aunts to be unrelated to us! The pictures start from page 147.

Download here (178 pages including history of the area at the time they travelled about.)

The search for Bridget

Where did the 'O' in O'Rourke come from on our ancestry?

Reality - Bridget Clark, mother of Hannah Clark, was born March 1846 in Ballynure, Wicklow and is shown as Bridget Rourke. Her parents are Peter Rourke married to Jane Harris. There are no other records for Peter and Jane in Wicklow that I can find as yet!

Bridget was married to William John Clarke in Dublin. The missing census shows William was at a military baracks in Essex so I assume he was stationed in County Cork when he met Bridget. They lived in county Cork for about 2-3 years and had their first 2 children before moving to England. The next 2 were born in Hampshire then they all moved to Dulwich and then Camberwell.

Before and after Ireland Williams name was spelled CLARK. Only in Ireland was it spelled with an 'e' at the end. Bridget was a 'Rourk' but on an English census her name was stated as Bridget O Clark. This could either be a missprint or she added the 'O.'I have checked and double checked these facts and I am certain that these people with their spelling differences are our Great-Grandparents. There are no other Bridgets born and christened in County Wicklow in 1846 nor any other William Clarke and Bridget Rourk married on the same day in the same year in Dublin, which is next to Wicklow.

The search will continue for Peter Rourke and Jane Harris but I need to know exactly where they were born first. I have no idea how or when I can do that so wish me luck in finding a document in a haystack!

Keith & Karen

We have just arrived home after a fantastic day at Terry & Ritas home where they lavashed us with food and drinks to meet Keith & Karen. Keith and his wife Karen are visiting England from Australia and its the first time I have met the 'boy in the pictures' who I've grown up knowing is my cousin Keith. It really is a lovely (and emotional) time when I meet anyone who I have 'known' all my life but never actually met or spoken to! Once again I met lovely people (everyone related to me is lovely), heard new family stories and a bit more of our tree has come to life and became more real rather than a cine film or a picture.

New pictures and stories will follow in the next couple of weeks. I have to add the rest of our 'Melhado' side too, which now goes back to Italy in the 1600's!

For now I have created a tree in the form of a pdf file for you to download that starts with our Grandad, Levy Davis, which is here - Ancesters of Levy Davis - You can either right-click on the link and choose 'Save Link As' to save it to your computer or left-click and it will open in a browser window. To enlarge it so you can read it just hold the control button down (the one that says 'Ctrl' on the bottom left of your keyboard) and at the same time scroll your mouse wheel away from you to make it bigger or toward you to make it smaller. You can do that to enlarge any page on the Internet too. Have fun!

Please note my email address: techlyn@sky.com so you can send me your scanned pictures and stories.

I found a guestbook on the ancestry.com website for you to add your comments and information. Please give it a try and let me know if it doesn't work please!

Please note: all the pictures have been scaled down to small files for screen quality and look good on the screen. Print quality will not be so good. If you want to print please email me for the original photograph.

Lots of Davis' together:

Everyone together and our Grandparents pictures are on the wall behind them. I have edited the ones who could not make it. The original picture is on Charlies' page.
