Money's tight. Fuel costs are skyrocketing. Passenger loads are getting heavier. These days you want a bus with an affordable initial cost. The lowest possible maintenance cost. Fuel costs you can live with. And you want it fast. We've got it: Orion. |
Welding for strength, to make the Orion the toughest bus on the road. |
The Orion story begins with steel and skill. Our craftsmen pay attention to minute detail as the frame is constructed in a jig. |
We make our underframe with tough 3-inch x 6-inch x 1/4-inch steel tubing with 3-inch x 1 1/2-inch cross members. As with every single structural joint in the Orion, we weld it together for two reasons: first, for extra strength and, secondly, because experience has shown that bolts or rivets can shake loose and become rust-traps. The Orion frame is rugged and trouble-free. |
Now we make the Orion even stronger. The body's space frame is constructed with 3-inch x 1 1/2-inch and 1 1/2-inch x 1 1/2-inch steel tubing. The Orion frame is precision made. It has to be. All side window openings, for instance, are the same standard size to help operators keep spare parts stocks to a minimum. The Orion crafts- men work with the same attention to detail as they would for an airplane fuselange. Today's traffic conditions demand it. Orion meets the challenge. |
For even greater strength the Orion roof is made separately to the same high standards as the rest of the frame. The frame is then sheathed in rust proof satin-coated steel, welded on for maximum life and strength. |
The roof is lowered | |
onto the frame | |
and welded into position. | |
Making Orion's rigid super- strong welded box frame the toughest bus on the road. |
The completed frame is degreased and moved to the paint shop for the first of many protective coats. |
|
The interior is insulated with one and a half inches of fiberglass sealed in polyethylene, and then covered with Melamine panels. The panels are not only anti-static and easy-clean, but are proofed against all but the most dedicated vandal. |
While all this is going on we are making the loom for the electrical system in our own plant. The control panel is clearly numbered for easy service. But the big advantage is the ease of access. By placing the panel on the outside of the bus, main- tenance staff can get to it without being either contor- tionists or having to remove other mechanical parts. Of course, we have taken the trouble to guarantee that the vital electrical panel is completely weatherproofed. |
All the major mechanical parts in the Orion are standard North American. The axles are Rockwell Standard; the engine, a Detroit Diesel 6V53 or 6V53T Turbo. And we've made everything more accessible, such as the slide-out battery tray. The exhaust system is stainless steel. All this means your Orion should spend less time in the maintenance bay. |
Now we are ready to put the finishing touches to the Orion. Over the 3/4-inch rot- proofed plywood base we place non-slip RCA Rubber, grooved in the aisle for extra safety. To minimize operator fatigue, the driver's seat is air cushioned and the control panel easy to operate. The seating/standee configuration and type of seat is to your specifications. |

Once your Orion is in service you'll notice a difference in your fuel bills they'll be down. Under city transit conditions operators have found the Orion averages between 7.5 and 8.25 miles per imperial gallon an incredible 600 miles plus on a tankful. Small wonder so many transit authorities are switching to Orion. |
We don't drive away once you've purchased an Orion. Every eventuality is covered. Manuals are supplied detailng every aspect of the Orion's construction, even though we know that your maintenance staff will be familiar with most of the mechanical details. If required we will train your staff. Spares are off the shelf, ready for immediate shipment. Our own body repair shop is available should your Orion become involved in a colli- sion. We'll have it back in service in mint condition. Fast. |
