The Club Car was developed by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communications for Dial-A-Bus service in Toronto, in conjunction with the Toronto Transit Commission. Initially 27 were ordered for Toronto, but early deliveries also went to Ottawa and Waterloo Region. The serials of over seventy Club Cars are recorded below, but it is possible that up to 100 were constructed.
The vehicles were built on conventional Dodge motor home chassis. The all-fibreglass moulded body was adapted from a recreational vehicle designed and manufactured by Rek Vee Industries of Scarborough, Ontario. Seating and interior fittings were by Funcraft Industries Ltd. of Cambridge. The Club Car featured 17 contoured seats arranged around the perimeter, but some had conventional 2+2 bus seating (possibly as a retrofit). They also had indirect lighting, under-the-seat ducted warm air heating, moulded foam with vinyl- and cloth-covered snap-on upholstery (for quick replacement when necessary), and picture windows. Early promotional literature indicated that "... it is planned to have some of the Club Cars modified [with] wider doors and a hydraulic lift arrangement [that] would permit loading of passenger[s] and wheelchair[s]". This link leads to a reproduction of the UTDC booklet, "the multi-purpose small bus" which describes the lift-equipped Club Car. (However, the only ones that I am aware of were the UTDC prototype, plus two operated by the Toronto Board of Education.) Almost all Club Cars had a single-leaf sedan-type door.
