Fortuno’s Initiative
FIRST MODEL FARMS IN RINCONADA
Bagong Ramrag. The Fourth
District of the province of Camarines Sur will spearhead the country’s
Agricultural and Fisheries Modernization Program (AFMA) by mounting the
first model farms in the country – the nucleus of Republic Act 8435 prescribing
economic prosperity through agricultural modernization.
In a formal letter to Agriculture
Secretary Edgardo J. Angara, Cong. Salvio B. Fortuno outlined his initiative
and reiterated his readiness to pilot in Rinconada area the model farms
for rice farmers and lake fishermen..
According to Fortuno, the tentative
formal launching of the first model farm will take place sometime in September
this year. Prior to this date, his staff is coordinating a 3-month program
of activities starting in July, which includes the generation of data,
training and orientation of farmers and fishermen as well as briefing of
participating local government personnel.
Angara, who was the principal
author of RA 8435 while he was still a senator, considers the modernization
program of agriculture as the centerpiece of the Estrada administration.
