Father Bonoan, S.J., AdeN
President, Passes On
Naga Newsday. Fr. Raul
J. Bonoan, S.J., President of the Ateneo de Naga University, died from
a heart attack on April 6 at Mirador Jesuit Villa in Baguio City.
Fr. Bonoan was known as an outstanding
educator, community leader, scholar, and writer.
During the 1986 Presidential
Snap Elections, Fr. Bonoan was credited for giving shelter to the computer
technicians who have walked out from PICC in protest of anomalous vote
tabulations.
As President of the Ateneo de
Naga, he engineered the dramatic recovery of the school from the brink
of closure into a very successful institution. Under his leadership, AdeN
reopened its graduate school, increased the number of college degree programs,
set up a successful endowment fund, and last February, won the conferment
of a university status last February by the Commission on Higher Learning.
But first and foremost, he was
a priest. His own guiding motto was St. Ignatius' very own, Ad Majorem
Dei Gloriam (for the greater glory of God).
Whether in Manila or in Naga,
Fr. Bonoan found time to say Masses for the poor and the underpriveleged.
He was 63 years old.
