July 22, 2002 - Monday

A little rain, but mostly nice.

Oh, what a great weekend!

On Saturday morning we got up really really early (about 6:20 am) and drove to the Sakata port. We met Lynden, and his two students, Miho and Mariko. We bought tickets for the Tobishima Ferry and got on board. Fumihiko and I found seats, but the others sat on the floor at the back. The trip to the Island was fine. I was a bit worried about being seasick, but I wasn't.

Weather on the island was great, except for 2 rain showers which occurred during lunch and during our rest time, so it didn't bother us at all.

On the first afternoon, Fumihiko and I went swimming in the ocean, which was a little cold, but nice after you got used to it. He used his new swimming mask to look at a lot of the sea life and I used it to see a couple of piranha (kidding) nibble at my toes. I guess they looked like food to the fish. Fumihiko is a much better swimmer than I am so he went out into the sea, while I stayed by the shore. It was heavenly. After a while we got out of the sea and sat on the path around the beach. We talked for a couple of hours. I did use sunscreen, but I still got a little burned where I didn't apply as much or waited a bit too long. Still, I'm really glad that I did put some on as I didn't have any pain.

The others went on a walk about the island and said it was really hot and humid where they were. They enjoyed themselves almost as much as we did I think.

In the evening we had a barbeque outdoors and ate some great food. We also had fireworks which Fumihiko seemed to be in charge of lighting. We all had an early night as the day started pretty early for everyone and most people had drunk quite a bit.

On Sunday morning we all slept in quite late and then had breakfast. After breakfast we went on a bike ride around the island. It was very difficult for me as a lot of it was uphill and I couldn't get the bike to get into a rhythm. I am afraid that I nearly gave up and walked home. I wasn't too nice at that time. I am pretty nasty when I am hot and sweaty and panting. Poor Fumihiko took most of the brunt of what I said. Oh dear. However, we finally got to the destination, a lookout point high on the hill, and it was gorgeous. The view was amazing. It really was beautiful. Coming down from there, it was all downhill and I got a lot of momentum built up in the bike. I had to ride the brake all the way down the hill and it was screaming! I'm sure that they heard me all over the island. If I'd been in the lead I maybe could have just let it go, but knowing me, probably not. I'm a big coward when it comes to speed.

We ate lunch a little later and then walked down to the ferry. We were all sad to leave Tobishima Island. It was so calm and peaceful. We all really enjoyed ourselves.

The ferry ride back to Sakata was a little bumpier than the one on the way out. I didn't get sick, I just kept telling myself that I was on a very long ride at Disneyland!

When we got back we decided to take the others out for supper so we went to Kamurotei, a yakiniku restaurant. Lynden, Fumihiko and I paid for the others as they'd done such a lot of work for us over the weekend and showed us a fabulous time.

This afternoon, Fumihiko and I went to a Chinese restaurant in Mikawa mall and had brunch! Then we went to the game center and didn't come out for several hours. Sigh. Oh dear. Still, it was fun. I won another jackpot, but it was just a small one this time.

Tonight we went to a French Restaurant in Mikawa where Fumihiko had steak and I had duck. It was delicious. Then, we came home. We are just in the process of unwinding and getting ready to go back to work tomorrow. Don't think I want to go, don't think I have a choice!

Night night!
