May 25, 2003 - Sunday

Warm day, but a bit cloudy.

I had a great day today! I got my iPod and saw a parade. What's not to like?

In the morning I once again woke up with the lovely smell of coffee in my room. I dragged myself awake and then drank some. We decided to go to Sakata, pick up my iPod and then have lunch. It was a good plan, but.... We got to the store and I tried to find a good case for my camera but couldn't. Then I paid for my iPod and the guy showed us who to use it a bit. I had noticed that there was a ADSL booth set up, so we went and talked to the guy. I couldn't understand most of what happened, but the upshot is that I think I'm getting ADSL. It should make my life a bit better...I hope! However, in Japan nothing is smooth so the men had to hem and haw for a few minutes. Meanwhile, my blood sugar was plummeting and I was starting to get very cranky. It didn't help that every electronic appliance that could make noise in the store was making noise!

When we finally escaped we went to M's Dining. We had a good lunch and then headed to the apartment to park. We thought that the parade was around 2, but we weren't sure. It was. We parked and walked to the parade street. Today in Tsuruoka was the Tenjin Festival. It's also called the Bakemono festival.

bakemono 2003

A typical Bakemono.
It's to honor a man who hid in Tsuruoka in the past. People walk in the parade wearing a yukata, a large straw hat, and a face mask. If you can successfully participate for 3 years without being recognized you will have a wish come true! While you walk in bakemono costume, you serve the parade watchers with sake, pop or tea. It's a lot of fun. A little cheesy in a way, but still kind of nice! My favourite float was this one.parade guys 2003 They took a rest just before this picture and they were drinking something. I don't think that it was water somehow! I hope they made it the rest of the way! However, my favourite group was the African drummers. I don't think they were African, but they played well and with joy, so I liked them the best! African Drummersafrican drums 2003

After the parade we went home and waited for Fumihiko's sister to arrive. I opened my iPod and tried to get it to work, but I couldn't. That was frustrating. I realized after a while that I was hungry and needed to eat, that's why I was getting so frustrated! I told Fumihiko that I needed to eat, and he took me out.

We went to the nice French restaurant in Mikawa and had a great meal. I really enjoyed it. We had steak, sashimi, salad, soup, and coffee. Fumihiko had dessert too, but I skipped it. It was a really enjoyable meal and afterwards they gave us a coupon to get 10% off our next meal, since we're good customers.

We came home and Fumihiko's nieces and nephew were at our house. However, as I don't speak a lot of Japanese (any?) and they didn't speak any English, it was a short conversation on my part! Fumihiko suggested that I come upstairs which I did and then he went down to visit them. I worked on my iPod and finally got it working in English. Hurray!

The rest of the night I spent at my computer, mostly playing games and writing this update. It was a good day. Not sure what I'll do tomorrow. Oh well! Night night!
