HCS Gets 74-51 Win Over Vasquez
HCS won in their home opener of the HCS Holiday Classic 74-51. Both teams started out slow with a first quarter score of 11-7. In the second quarter the Patriots began to play well and pulled away from the Mustangs 22-17 for a half time score of 33-24. Vasquez' Pat Baughman and Kyle Jensen helped bring the Mustangs back as they beat HCS in the third quarter 16-12. HCS showed their heart in the final quarter playing as hard as they have all season to pull away and grab the victory to propel themselves in to the semifinals against Linfield Christian on Friday night. The Patriots really improved in the rebounding and steals departments with 40 rebounds and 22 steals. Senior Josh Hamilton scored 55% from the floor as he went on to get his career high of 34 points. Most impressive this evening was the play of young sophmore Billy Hague. He took over the point guard from a flu ridden Trevor Wagstaffe and had a phenomenal night. He scored 12 points , 6 rebounds and had a career high 8 steals. Soph Zach Howard also made a major contribution with his career scoring high of 11 points, many in the decisive fourth quarter. The only bad side of tonight's win was HCS' abysmal free throw shooting. They shot a season low 29% from the charity line. That will have to improve if they desire to go anywhere in the playoffs where free throws decide games. HCS is now 3-1.

Game Preview
Hesperia Christian opens their first home game in the HCS Holiday Tournament against Vasquez of Acton, a Div IV team. HCS beat Vasquez 74-69 last season in this tournament and beat them 83-49 two years ago. Vasquez is a scrappy team and cannot be overlooked as was seen in last year's game. HCS needs to pick up their game and really rebound in this game as they did when they got 39 rebounds against Pahrump Valley. Steals have dropped way down since the first game. The guards will have to increase their assists over the last game when they had a low of only 9 assists. Trevor Wagstaffe has to pick up his scoring as does Mike Peterson. Josh Hamilton needs to find a way to get his 30 points and at the same time get his teammates involved. Hopefully Sean Bayer will have overcome his injury and be able to provide support in the paint. Steve Pappas finally got into the groove in the game against Granite Hills scoring 8 points and will need to continue that. And Loren Barton needs to show Vasquez who owns the boards in his own home gym. Nate Glass needs to really pick up his rebounding as well. HCS is presently 2-1.
