Competition began at 09:00 with the last event at 18:25. Feature events included Day 1 of the Decathlon and Finals of the Women's Pole Vault, Javelin and 100m; the Finals of the Men's Triple Jump and 400m.
Qualification rounds were held on Day 2, August 4. Canada's Stephanie McCann (North Delta, BC) established a national record with a jump of 4.25m but failed to qualify for the final.
During the final, there was some confusion in setting the depth of the bar which resulted in missed attempts by a number of competitors. The vaulters who were affected were allowed another attempt, leading to an exciting duel between world champion Stacy Dragila and Svetlana Feofanova.
The second youngest competitor in this event, Monika Pyrek of Poland POL won the bronze medal. She celebrated her 20th birthday five days later. 2000 Olympic silver medalist Tatiana Grigorieva finished fourth.
